A 74-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter following a tragic incident in Delaware that resulted in the death of a woman. Walter Moorhead, identified as a hunter, allegedly mistook 39-year-old Santos Maria Chilel Soto for a deer, fatally shooting her during a hunting expedition on 18 September.

The Delaware State Police received an emergency call at approximately 7:40 PM on that Friday, responding to reports of a shooting in an open field in Ellendale. Upon arrival, officers discovered Soto lying in the field and initiated lifesaving efforts. Unfortunately, despite these attempts, she was pronounced dead later at a nearby hospital.
At the time of the shooting, Soto was walking in the area accompanied by a man and two children. Authorities have indicated that they were in close proximity to where the incident occurred. This context has intensified the scrutiny surrounding the circumstances of Soto’s death.
Immediately after the incident, police engaged with Moorhead, who was located nearby. Investigators quickly established that he had discharged the firearm that struck Soto. After being taken into custody, he has since been released on a $43,000 cash bond.
