“Deadliest Catch” Episode Shows Late Star Todd Meadows Get Cleared to Return to Boat After Medical Incident Before His Death

Tragedy struck the crew of the Aleutian Lady when 25-year-old deckhand Todd Meadows lost his life following a serious incident at sea. Meadows had recently returned to the fishing vessel after recovering from a concussion sustained during his duties. His untimely death on February 25th, after he fell overboard, has been ruled an accident.

Meadows’ story was featured in a recent episode of the Discovery Channel series “Deadliest Catch,” which chronicles the day-to-day challenges faced by those working in the perilous Bering Sea. The episode, aired on September 18th, highlights both his return and the struggles the crew encountered during the fishing season.

At the end of January, Meadows suffered a concussion when he sustained a blow to the head while aboard the Aleutian Lady. As a precaution, he was sent home to recover for two weeks. During this time, Captain Rick Shelford reflected on the crew’s setbacks, stating, “We went from pulling the pots to having our hydraulic ram blow out, and then losing a deckhand,” referring to Meadows’ absence and the difficulties it created.

While Meadows recuperated, Shelford brought in a temporary replacement named Brandon. However, Brandon faced challenges that made him unsuitable for the demanding workload on deck. “If he’s saying his back hurts… I can’t have him out on deck,” Shelford remarked, highlighting the need for reliable crew members during critical operations.

Fortunately, when Meadows was medically cleared to return, Shelford was overjoyed at the prospect of having him back on board. “Todd is an up-and-comer, and I want him on the boat, so the fact that he’s cleared… we’ll just go about our merry way,” he said. Shelford personally greeted Meadows at the airport, expressing his happiness at the reunion, and they prepared to return to work as a team.

Tragically, just weeks after his return to the sea, Meadows fell overboard while working on the Aleutian Lady. According to reports from the U.S. Coast Guard, he was recovered approximately 10 minutes later but was unresponsive. Despite immediate first aid and efforts to resuscitate him, resuscitation attempts were unfortunately unsuccessful.

The cause of death for Todd Meadows was later listed as drowning, compounded by probable hypothermia. His passing has been ruled an accident, leaving behind three young children and a grieving community.

Meadows was first introduced to “Deadliest Catch” viewers posthumously in a July 17th episode, which aired nearly five months after his death. His appearance captured tender moments with his children before embarking on his first fishing season, showcasing his dedication as both a crew member and a father.

Capt. Shelford has spoken of Meadows in heartfelt terms, labelling him “a devoted father” who had quickly become part of the crew’s family. In a tribute on social media, Shelford conveyed the profound impact Meadows had on the team, stating, “We lost our brother, Todd Meadows. He worked hard, loved deeply, and brought joy to those around him.”

The Discovery Channel has also expressed condolences, noting the profound loss felt by Meadows’ loved ones, crewmates, and the wider fishing community. A spokesperson articulated, “This is a devastating loss, and our hearts are with his loved ones.”
