An MRI technician has been arrested and charged with sexual assault following an incident involving a 64-year-old female patient at HCA Florida St. Lucie Hospital. Gabriel Cruz, 42, faces accusations of sexually assaulting the patient during an MRI scan on 13 September 2023. He has been charged with sexual battery against a physically helpless or incapacitated individual.

Cruz’s arrest took place on 16 September after the woman reported the alleged assault to a staff member at the hospital the following day. Prior to the MRI, the patient was administered medication that rendered her drowsy, making her vulnerable during the procedure.
The investigation into the allegation began when hospital staff alerted the Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD). Upon receiving the report, officers worked in conjunction with the hospital to identify Cruz as the primary suspect. Surveillance footage from the MRI area played a crucial role in the investigation, showing the patient entering and exiting the room as well as footage of Cruz disposing of items shortly after the scan.
The materials that Cruz discarded were subsequently collected and examined by detectives.
