A dog named Simba has found himself in distressing circumstances after being separated from his family in Florida. Following the detention of his owners by immigration authorities, the beloved pet has been taken to a local shelter, prompting an appeal from a rescue organisation to help reunite them.

Simba’s journey began in Venezuela, where he travelled alongside his family—Yurimar, her husband, and their three children—on a 2,300-mile trek to seek political asylum in the United States. In 2022, during this perilous journey, the family carried Simba in a backpack through treacherous terrains, including the notoriously dangerous Darién Gap between Colombia and Central America.
Upon their arrival in the U.S. in 2022, the family faced the challenge of navigating their immigration process, which resulted in an initial separation from Simba. They were determined to keep their furry companion close, and with the assistance of Bridge Pups Rescue, a charity dedicated to helping asylum-seeking families retain custody of their pets, Simba was cared for until they could secure pet-friendly housing.
However, this fragile stability came to an unexpected halt on September 10, when Yurimar and her children attended an immigration appointment in Florida. Both she and her children were detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and subsequently transported to the Dilley Immigration Processing Centre in Texas. With the family’s situation uncertain, Simba was left alone at home until a concerned neighbour alerted authorities, leading to his transfer to Orange County Animal Services in Orlando. His father’s whereabouts also remained uncertain at the time.
Yurimar had anticipated the possibility of self-deportation prior to her detention, and had proactively contacted Bridge Pups Rescue regarding her worries for Simba. Ruby Montana, founder of the rescue organisation, expressed her concerns over the sudden communication gap that ensued and confirmed that Yurimar is currently being held in an ICE facility.
Montana described her long-standing connection with Yurimar, noting the deep bond she has with her children and her pet. “Since meeting Yurimar in 2022, I have witnessed firsthand the immense love she has for her children and for Simba, whom she lovingly calls her ‘hijo’,” Montana remarked, emphasising the family’s commitment to Simba’s well-being.
In light of the recent developments, Bridge Pups Rescue is mobilising to secure Simba’s release from the Florida shelter. Plans have been put in motion to arrange for him to stay at a foster home in Orlando until he can be transported back to their main facility in El Paso. Montana highlighted the emotional turmoil Simba is likely experiencing, citing the separation anxiety he has developed while away from his family.
“[Simba] has separation anxiety from his family, so I can only imagine the confusion,” Montana shared in an update, while also ensuring that they will maintain communication with Yurimar concerning Simba’s situation. The organisation is dedicated to keeping her informed and updated as they work towards reuniting the family.
In a show of commitment, Bridge Pups Rescue has also indicated a willingness to facilitate Simba’s journey back to Venezuela, should his family be deported. This has been a significant priority for the rescue, reinforcing their mission to sustain the bond between pets and their owners during challenging circumstances.
