Purdy gained worldwide acclaim during her appearance on the reality dance competition, *Dancing with the Stars*, where she became the first-ever double amputee to compete in the show’s history in 2014. Partnered with professional dancer Derek Hough, she captivated audiences with her robust spirit and resilience, eventually finishing as the runner-up alongside Olympic ice dancer Meryl Davis. Her participation marked a pivotal moment for representation in the arts and sports, as it showcased the capabilities of athletes with disabilities.
Despite enduring life-altering medical setbacks, including a severe blood clot in 2019 that prompted multiple surgeries and additional amputations, Purdy has demonstrated remarkable strength and adaptability. Reflecting on her recovery journey in an interview with NIH MedlinePlus, she emphasised her gratitude for the progress she has made. “I am grateful to be doing well now… It’s been a journey but another reminder for me of how incredible and adaptable the human body is,” she shared.

After a successful career in snowboarding, which included three Paralympic medals, Purdy announced her retirement in March 2022. Her decision came after competing in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics, where she secured a silver and bronze medal. In her retirement statement, she expressed that snowboarding had granted her an extraordinary life and treasure trove of experiences.

Purdy’s contributions to adaptive sports have not gone unrecognized. In 2022, she was inducted into the National Adaptive Sports Hall of Fame, a testament to her pivotal role in championing snowboarding as an official sport in the Paralympic Games. The induction ceremony acknowledged her historical leap from the podium to the dance floor, emphasising her impact in showcasing the potential of adaptive athletes.
In addition to her athletic achievements, Purdy has dedicated herself to her nonprofit organisation, Adaptive Action Sports, which she co-founded with her husband, Daniel Gale, in 2005. The initiative aims to create opportunities for people with physical disabilities to participate in competitive sports, particularly snowboarding and skateboarding. Purdy’s commitment to empowering others has been evident in her efforts to reach underserved demographics, particularly women in action sports, who often face additional barriers to entry.
Further adding to her accomplishments, Purdy published her second book, *Bounce Forward*, in April 2026. The book serves as a guide to navigating life’s inevitable changes and building resilience—a theme she has lived through herself. Discussing her motivations behind the publication, Purdy explained that resilience is about developing the tools to manage adversity, rather than simply maintaining strength in challenging times.
Her steadfast presence as a motivational speaker has also established her as a prominent figure in the field, earning her a spot among the top 25 speakers in the world. Her powerful narrative continues to inspire countless individuals, proving that determination and courage can lead to remarkable outcomes, regardless of circumstances.
As Purdy continues to champion adaptive sports and motivational speaking, her legacy grows stronger. She remains a symbol of hope and resilience, using her platform to impact the lives of others profoundly. Whether through her writing, her nonprofit work, or her appearances in the media, Amy Purdy stands as an inspiring reminder of the incredible capabilities of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
