The animated satirical series “South Park” is poised to return this September for its 29th season, albeit under a new name—“South America.” This rebranding coincides with the show’s premiere on 16 September and is reflective of a bold move by its creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who have committed to this new identity for the series.

Parker and Stone revealed their reasons for the change in a recent press release, stating, “Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA.” They elaborated in a statement to PEOPLE that the change signified their unwavering commitment to “SOUTH AMERICA.” The switch is a nod to former President Donald Trump’s controversial attempts to rename bodies of water, which included signing an executive order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America” last August.
“South Park” has captivated audiences since its debut in 1997, featuring the hilarious escapades of four young boys—Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman and Kenny McCormick. The show is renowned for its sharp satire, tackling subjects across the political spectrum, celebrity culture, and numerous current events. The series continues to be a major player in the realm of adult animation, winning several Emmy Awards throughout its run.
The upcoming season will consist of six episodes, which slightly surpasses the count from seasons 27 and 28. The new season is part of a comprehensive, five-year deal signed with Paramount Global in July 2025, valued at a staggering $1.5 billion. This agreement allows Parker and Stone to produce a total of 50 new episodes by 2030, ensuring the future of the show remains secure.
The season 29 premiere episode, titled “South American Biker Gangs,” will introduce viewers to its fresh identity. The storyline centres on the arrival of e-bikes in this “new” South America, drastically transforming the environment for the boys as parents grapple with their children’s antics. According to a description shared on Instagram, “When e-bikes arrive in South America, the boys take over the streets, and the parents of South America can hardly recognise South America.”
Following the premiere, new episodes will be broadcast biweekly on Wednesday evenings, returning to the established time slot of 10 p.m. ET. The full season 29 release schedule is as follows: the premiere on 16 September, followed by the second episode on 30 September, the third episode on 14 October, the fourth episode on 28 October, the fifth on 11 November, and concluding with the sixth episode on 25 November.
For viewers eager to enjoy the upcoming season, “South Park” will air on Comedy Central, with episodes available for streaming on Paramount+ the day after their initial broadcast. Subscribers to Paramount+ can also find all previous 28 seasons of the series available for binge-watching.
Despite the name change, fans of “South Park” can expect the same satirical edge that has defined the show for over two decades. The creators have made it clear that their commitment to addressing social and political issues through the lens of comedy is unwavering, and the rebranding appears to be an evolution of that mission rather than a departure from it.
As it returns with a fresh title and new storylines, “South America” promises to deliver the same irreverent humour and cultural commentary that fans have come to know and love. The upcoming season is sure to spark discussions, reflecting the creators’ courage to tackle contemporary issues head-on while maintaining the essence of the series that has garnered a devoted following.
