A new floral exhibition celebrating the life and legacy of Princess Diana has officially opened its doors at Somerset House in central London. This captivating display, part of the international flower show Fleurs de Villes, comprises 15 stunning installations inspired by some of Diana’s most iconic outfits, meticulously crafted from thousands of fresh blooms.

The exhibition, which will run until 6th October, aims to evoke the essence of Princess Diana’s style while supporting The Diana Award, a charity focused on empowering young individuals. Each floral mannequin reflects a significant moment from her life, showcasing outfits that captured both her spirit and her dedication to humanitarian causes.
Among the highlights of the exhibition are floral recreations of Diana’s attire from her first overseas tour in Australia and the impactful ensemble she wore while visiting a minefield in Angola in 1997, where she raised awareness about landmines. Additionally, the display will feature the “caring dress” she donned during visits to children’s hospitals and the elegant gown designed by Catherine Walker that she wore while engaging with AIDS patients in Rio de Janeiro.
Dr Tessy Ojo CBE, CEO of The Diana Award, spoke about the importance of remembering Diana’s legacy, especially as the 30th anniversary of her tragic death approaches next year. “Diana had a passion for shining a light on others,” she remarked. “Our aim with this exhibition is to narrate the stories of the young people who, inspired by her values of care, compassion, and bravery, are making a difference in society.”
Reflecting on the poignancy of the moment, Dr Ojo recalled the overwhelming floral tributes that adorned Kensington High Street following Diana’s death in 1997. She noted, “That moment was heavy with grief, but we’re now reshaping that narrative around flowers into something celebratory.” The exhibition allows visitors to re-engage with the memory of Diana through a lens of positivity and hope.
The exhibition is organised into four thematic chapters. The first, titled “A Global Icon,” outlines Diana’s widespread influence; “Cultural Diplomacy” emphasises how her fashion choices fostered connections between diverse communities; “Championing Change” spotlights stories of her compassion; and “Wardrobe with Purpose” honours her philanthropic legacy.
Karen Marshall, co-founder of Fleurs de Villes, described how the selection process for the outfits was intricate, as teams of florists sifted through numerous looks to identify the 15 that they felt conveyed a narrative of joy. “We intentionally focused on her joyful moments rather than some of the more dramatic outfits, like the infamous ‘revenge dress’,” she explained. “We want this exhibition to reflect positivity, which is synonymous with flowers.”
The intricate recreation of Diana’s hair, represented by “botanical wigs” made from straw and various grasses, showcases the dedication of the florists involved. Marshall elaborated on the technical challenges of replicating Diana’s form-fitting gowns, stating that they opted for those with fuller skirts to enhance the floral presentation.
In terms of logistics, it is noteworthy that the exhibition is a “perishable art show,” requiring florists to maintain and refresh the arrangements frequently. “It’s an ongoing process,” noted Marshall. “Our team has to be exceptionally skilled in managing the flowers and ensuring that the beauty of the displays remains constant throughout the exhibition duration.”
The Fleurs de Villes Diana exhibition is situated in the East Wing Galleries of Somerset House, and runs until early October. Tickets are priced at £34.25, with a portion of the proceeds going directly to The Diana Award, the only charity established in Princess Diana’s honour, dedicated to the empowerment of young people.
