MUNA, the popular indie pop trio, announced that one of its members, Naomi McPherson, will be absent from the onset of their autumn tour due to a deeply personal and distressing reason. The guitarist’s mother, Harriet, is facing an advanced and aggressive form of cancer, prompting McPherson to spend her remaining time with her during what the band describes as her “final days.”

This announcement was made by MUNA on September 15, as the band prepares to embark on its ‘Gets So Hot’ tour, starting on September 25 in Philadelphia. In their public statement, the group expressed their sorrow over the situation, sharing that the decision for McPherson to pause her involvement in the tour was made with “heavy hearts.”

The news underscores a poignant chapter in MUNA’s journey, with the band highlighting the significance of Harriet in their lives. They explained that over the past few weeks, her illness has deteriorated rapidly, making the emotional decision to prioritise family over performances all the more pressing. MUNA’s members, Katie Gavin, Josette Maskin, and McPherson, all acknowledge the profound influence Harriet has had on their artistry and personal growth.
To ensure the tour proceeds smoothly in McPherson’s absence, the group has arranged for musician Lou Roy to step in. Roy will perform during the initial concerts, and MUNA has encouraged fans to extend a warm welcome to her. In her own message, Roy expressed her determination to deliver memorable performances, despite the challenging circumstances.
Fans who attend the early shows are being given an opportunity to connect with McPherson during this difficult time. MUNA shared plans for a letter drop at their merchandise stands, allowing audience members to leave supportive messages for McPherson. This initiative reflects the band’s commitment to not only honour their member but also engage their community during what they describe as one of the hardest experiences they have faced together.
The group reassured fans that the initial shows will continue as scheduled while they prepare for the inevitable challenges ahead. McPherson’s absence will span several key performances, including stops in cities like Phoenix, Dallas, Austin, Nashville, and Atlanta, as well as a potentially uncertain participation in the All Things Go music festival in New York on September 27.
In their heartfelt statement, the band acknowledged the complex emotions surrounding their tour launch without McPherson, while also celebrating the joy that music has brought to Harriet throughout her life. They stated, “Watching them play music is what filled Harriet with the most joy and pride,” emphasising her role not just as a parent, but as a source of inspiration for the group.
Moreover, MUNA expressed their gratitude towards fans for their continued support, recognising the meaning it brings to their lives, especially during trying times. As they prepare to share their music despite the personal turmoil, the band hopes to channel their experiences into a performance that resonates deeply with their audience.
The North American leg of the ‘Gets So Hot’ tour is set to conclude on October 21 at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. Following this, MUNA will head across the Atlantic for a European leg that includes stops in countries such as France, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
As MUNA navigates this challenging period, the band remains focused on the power of community, love, and support — bringing together fans, friends, and family to honour the enduring legacy of Harriet and the bond shared between them all.
