A troubling incident in Kingsport, Tennessee, has resulted in the arrest of a mother after her four children were discovered alone at their home. Law enforcement responded to the scene on Sunday morning, 13 September, following concerns raised about the children’s safety.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office received a report indicating that the four children, aged 8 and younger, had been left without adult supervision since Friday, 11 September. Upon arrival at the residence, deputies contacted the children and found them to be in distress. According to authorities, the children revealed that their mother, Thea Chyanne Sorrell, had not been present nor had she communicated with them for several days.
Conditions inside the home were described as unsanitary and unsafe, prompting deputies to take immediate action. They observed that a pet dog also lacked access to food and water. Recognising the seriousness of the situation, officers contacted the Department of Children’s Services as well as the Sullivan County Animal Control for assistance in ensuring the safety of the children and the animal.
Shortly after the deputies arrived, Sorrell, aged 33, returned to the home. She was found to be a passenger in a truck operated by Matthew Brown, 37, who was subsequently apprehended alongside her. During their investigation, deputies unearthed a range of troubling substances and items within the truck. Reports indicated the presence of what appeared to be methamphetamine and heroin, as well as firearms, one of which had been reported stolen.
The authorities charged Sorrell with multiple offences, including three felony counts of child abuse/neglect related to her children’s safety, a misdemeanor for cruelty to animals, and one count of child endangerment. She is currently being held at Sullivan County Jail on a bond of $50,000.
Brown, whose legal troubles included two outstanding warrants for probation violations, faced equally severe charges. Deputies found that he was operating his vehicle with a suspended licence and was in possession of various illegal substances and weapons. Notably, the search resulted in the discovery of 306 grams of material believed to be methamphetamine, numerous loaded firearms, and other drug paraphernalia.
As a consequence of these findings, Brown has been charged with multiple felonies, including maintaining a drug dwelling and possession of firearms during the commission of a dangerous felony. He is detained at the Sullivan County Jail with a bond set at $100,000.
This case raises significant concerns about child welfare and safety, particularly in instances of neglect and exposure to criminal activity.
