A significant study involving over 40 satellite observations has revealed that global sea levels have risen by more than 1.2 inches since the 1970s, primarily due to extensive ice loss in Greenland and Antarctica. This alarming finding underscores the urgency of addressing climate change, as the consequences of rising sea levels could pose an increased threat to coastal communities around the world.

Conducted by the international Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-Comparison Exercise (IMBIE) team, which comprises polar scientists supported by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), the research highlights that approximately 12.5 trillion tons of ice have melted from these polar regions over the past 47 years. Notably, Greenland is responsible for a substantial portion of this loss, contributing about 0.7 inches to the sea level rise.

The data released indicates that 84% of the ice loss is attributed to glaciers flowing more rapidly into the ocean, rather than from surface melting. This observation suggests that the dynamics of ice sheets are responding to the warming oceans, which may have critical implications for future climate scenarios.
Eric Rignot, an ice scientist at the University of California, Irvine, and a co-author of the study, warned that ongoing ice loss will intensify coastal erosion and flooding. He stated, “We are melting the polar regions; sea level is rising worldwide, and this will exacerbate the vulnerability of coastal regions.”
The research methodology included the use of extensive satellite imagery, beginning with the early archive of Landsat, the longest-running Earth observation programme. By integrating data from 42 independent satellite surveys and utilising 27 different satellite missions, the team was able to construct a comprehensive view of ice sheet changes since the 1970s.
Dr. Inès Otosaka from Northumbria University, who led the study, explained that their findings reveal significant alterations to the ice sheets over the past half-century. She emphasized that the predominant cause of ice loss is due to the rapid movement of glaciers into the ocean, rather than solely due to atmospheric factors.
The trend of accelerating ice loss became particularly pronounced from the 1990s onwards, with Greenland experiencing losses of around 291 billion tons annually during the 2010s, a sharp increase from 66 billion tons in the 1980s. Similarly, Antarctica’s losses escalated from approximately 53 billion tons to over 222 billion tons in the same period.
Interestingly, the study noted that the most recent data spanning 2020 to 2023 indicated a slight decline in the rate of ice loss. This reduction is primarily attributed to extraordinary snowfall in East Antarctica and relatively milder summers in Greenland. However, scientists caution that these recent fluctuations are likely transient and do not indicate a long-term reversal in the trend of ice loss.
Professor Andrew Shepherd, another co-lead author of the study and a founder of IMBIE, highlighted the importance of such research in safeguarding communities at risk from climate change. He remarked, “With the ice sheets set to lose much more ice in the decades ahead, global assessments like IMBIE are vital to protecting communities.”
Dr. Tyler Sutterley, also a co-lead on the project, affirmed the value of satellite technology in providing year-on-year snapshots of these critical changes. He stated, “Satellites give us continent-wide, year-on-year evidence of what is happening now, and that is exactly what we need to test models and narrow the uncertainties in projections of future sea level rise.”
