An 18-year-old college student has been pronounced dead following an incident linked to a fraternity gathering in Fullerton, California. Anthony Joseph Blas was dropped off at St. Jude Medical Center’s emergency department in the early hours of Sunday, September 13, where he sadly could not be revived.

According to the Fullerton Police Department, officers were alerted to the hospital shortly after midnight when Blas was discovered unresponsive. Medical personnel were unable to save him, and he was declared dead shortly after arrival, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Preliminary findings suggest that Blas had been attending a social event at an unaffiliated fraternity prior to the incident. Authorities indicated that his death might have been influenced by excessive alcohol consumption. “Based on the preliminary investigation, alcohol consumption appears to have been a contributing factor in the male’s death,” the police reported in a public statement. The exact cause and manner of death, however, will ultimately be determined by the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office.
The Fullerton Police Department is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. Authorities have stated that there is currently no evidence indicating foul play, and they do not believe hazing was involved.
In response to the tragedy, California State University, Fullerton, expressed its condolences in a public statement. The university acknowledged the student’s passing and extended its thoughts to Blas’ family and the campus community. “Our hearts are with the student’s family and the campus community during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read. “The university is providing support to students, including counselling through our Counseling and Psychological Services, and is reaching out to those who may be affected.”
The university has made it clear that, while the investigation is ongoing, any further inquiries about the case should be directed to the Fullerton Police Department. As investigations continue, authorities have encouraged anyone who may have pertinent information regarding the incident to come forward. They can contact Fullerton Police Detective Carrillo at (714) 738-5361 or via email at Eric.Carrillo@fullertonpd.org.
This tragic event has sparked discussions within the university and broader community about the consequences of alcohol consumption during such gatherings. The loss of a young life is a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with binge drinking, particularly in university settings where social events often involve large amounts of alcohol.
As the Fullerton Police Department continues their investigation, it is imperative that students and local communities remain vigilant about the risks associated with excessive drinking, particularly during social activities. University officials are likely to review policies regarding responsible alcohol consumption at events in light of this incident, aiming to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
The death of Anthony Blas marks a significant loss for the Cal State Fullerton community, and it is a poignant reminder of the importance of safety and responsibility when it comes to alcohol consumption among young adults.
