The emotional ceremony was marked by two standing ovations for Fox, reflecting the deep respect the audience holds for him. Julianna Margulies, Fox’s former co-star from “The Good Wife,” presented him with the award, highlighting the actor’s remarkable contributions to both the entertainment industry and public health.
In his heartfelt acceptance speech, Fox expressed immense gratitude towards his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their four children — Sam, Aquinnah, Schuyler, and Esmé. He thanked them for their unwavering support throughout his journey with Parkinson’s, which he publicly announced in 1998. “I thank Tracy and our kids for their sacrifices, for their patience and for their love. You have no idea,” he shared with the audience.
Fox reflected on his initial fears regarding how his diagnosis may impact his acting career and how audiences would respond if they were aware of his condition. He reminisced, “Initially, I kept my Parkinson’s diagnosis a secret. I worried that it would affect my work and my relationships with audiences. Would they laugh if they knew I was sick?” However, he came to realise that the support from his fans gave him the confidence to persevere. “You made me feel like I could keep doing this,” he added, evoking understanding and compassion from those in attendance.
The Television Academy’s decision to award Fox the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award was announced in July, acknowledging his contributions that extend well beyond his successful acting career. Fox founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000, which has since become the largest non-profit organisation funding Parkinson’s research, having channeled over £3 billion into various initiatives aimed at finding a cure and improving treatments.
Earlier discussions with the media revealed Fox’s motivations for becoming a public spokesperson for the disease. He acknowledged that his celebrity status could expedite attention and funding for necessary research, saying, “I know the issues and I share my community’s sense of urgency.”
Despite the challenges posed by the symptoms of Parkinson’s, including tremors and balance difficulties, Fox remains resolute in his mission to support research efforts. “Of course, things have gotten harder over the years,” he commented, yet he continues to find purpose in advocating for a cure. During the ceremony, Cris Abrego, Chair of the Television Academy, praised Fox for his leadership in raising awareness about Parkinson’s disease and his ability to inspire global support through his foundation. Fox’s efforts have accelerated scientific breakthroughs, showcasing the power of one individual to incite meaningful change.
Fox’s achievements in acting were also underlined during the event, as he received his 19th Emmy nomination for his role in the Apple TV series “Shrinking.” This role marks a return to acting for Fox, who had previously taken a step back due to the challenges posed by the disease. “This new character allows me to show up on set as myself,” he explained, highlighting the special connection he feels with his current project.
His illustrious career spans multiple accolades, including five Emmy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, and a Grammy Award. His life and work were further explored in the Apple TV documentary “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” which received critical acclaim and multiple nominations.
In addition to his numerous accolades, Fox has received prestigious honours such as the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada and later promoted within the Order.
