Josh Malina Was Promised a Role in “The Big Bang Theory” After He Wasn’t Cast as Leonard for Being ‘Too Old’

**Joshua Malina Reflects on Initial Audition for The Big Bang Theory**

Actor Joshua Malina recently shared his experience auditioning for a role in the iconic sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, revealing that he originally sought to portray Leonard Hofstadter, a character ultimately played by Johnny Galecki. In a candid discussion on a podcast dedicated to the series, Malina recalled the moment he realised he was perhaps not the ideal fit for the role.

At the age of 60, Malina remembered the excitement that accompanied his audition. He began reading his lines when Chuck Lorre, the show’s creator, paused him mid-performance. “I was excited,” he recounted, “but then Chuck said, ‘I’m going to stop you here.’ I immediately thought, ‘I’m too old, right?’ and he confirmed that I was.”

Malina expressed gratitude to Lorre for his straightforward approach. “He could have let me continue for several scenes, leaving me waiting by the phone afterwards,” he noted. “Instead, he chose to be upfront with me about the fit of the role.” This honesty resonated with Malina, who admitted that even during the audition he sensed that his age might not align with the character’s youthful persona.

What followed was a moment that is not all too common in Hollywood. “Chuck said he couldn’t picture it working out,” Malina recounted. “However, he assured me that there would eventually be an opportunity for me in the show. He mentioned that the characters would have a boss one day and promised, ‘We’ll make you the boss.’” At that point, Malina was rather sceptical, thinking it was simply a kind gesture rather than a genuine commitment.

The actor reflected on how the series exploded in popularity in the years that followed. “I remember telling my agents, ‘That was nice of him to say, but I’m not holding my breath,’” Malina said. Yet, as time passed and The Big Bang Theory soared to success, he found himself amusingly forgetting about that first audition. “Three years later, I had completely moved on. Even as I watched the show become a major hit, I occasionally found myself thinking about how I had only read three lines for that role!”

However, sticking to his word, Lorre came back to Malina, casting him as Caltech President Dr. Siebert in the show’s fourth season. Malina expressed his joy upon receiving the offer, saying, “They just reached out and offered it to me. I was delighted.”

In addition to his role on The Big Bang Theory, Malina has appeared in the show’s spinoff, *Stuart Fails to Save the Universe*, which debuted in July on HBO Max. This series centres around the character Stuart Bloom, portrayed by Kevin Sussman, and traces his adventures as he endeavours to mend reality after a device created by the show’s beloved Sheldon Cooper and Leonard goes awry.

Malina’s journey from auditioning for a major role to eventually becoming part of the show’s ensemble reflects a unique narrative often seen in the entertainment industry.
