Ed Sheeran has publicly addressed the recent removal of rapper Macklemore from his Loop Tour, following a controversy surrounding the latter’s vocal stance on the Palestinian situation. In a statement shared on Instagram, Sheeran expressed his dismay over the conflict between Israel and Palestine, describing it as a significant human tragedy that exacerbates global suffering.

Macklemore’s exit from the tour was reported by Rolling Stone on September 14, amid backlash against his comments supporting the Palestinian cause, which allegedly led to pressure from venue owners. Following these revelations, Sheeran took to social media on September 15 to clarify his position and shed light on the circumstances surrounding Macklemore’s departure.
“I am appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine,” Sheeran wrote. He reiterated his respect for Macklemore as an artist, adding that the rapper initially sought to join the tour, a request he accepted. The 35-year-old singer emphasised that he respects his support acts’ artistic freedom and allows them to choose their own setlists.
However, Sheeran noted that venues associated with his upcoming shows informed him they would withdraw if Macklemore remained part of the lineup. He revealed that discussions with venue representatives, including influential figures such as Robert Kraft, were held in an attempt to resolve the issue, but ultimately, the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the promoters.
“I did not make the decision for Macklemore to come off the tour. It was the promoters’ decision,” Sheeran clarified, expressing his commitment to his fans and touring crew. He reiterated that he would never jeopardise their work or deny them the opportunity to perform.
Sheeran further explained that while he holds personal views on the ongoing conflict, he prefers to keep his music and concerts a space for enjoyment and unity rather than political discourse. He acknowledged Macklemore’s right to express himself but noted that there are alternative paths to advocating for peace. “If we only focus on shouting the loudest, nothing will ever change,” he stated, emphasising the need for a measured approach in addressing such sensitive issues.
In a follow-up statement, Macklemore shared his perspective, revealing that he and Sheeran had meaningful discussions, albeit difficult ones, regarding the situation. He stated that their friendship remained intact, despite their fundamental disagreements over the handling of the tour and his advocacy for Palestine.
Macklemore recounted a phone call where Sheeran relayed that Kraft and several stadium owners collectively issued an ultimatum: Macklemore’s presence on the tour would result in the cancellation of Sheeran’s shows. “Ed told me that Kraft said I would not be allowed to perform in his stadium,” Macklemore stated.
Concert promoter Messina Touring Group confirmed that venues had communicated their unwillingness to host concerts featuring Macklemore, citing concerns that his presence would lead to the cancellation of the tour, which could impact countless fans. As a result, they reached a decision for Macklemore to step down from the remaining shows.
Kraft issued a statement defending the decision for Macklemore’s removal, citing the need to uphold a platform that does not endorse hate speech. He distinguished his disapproval of Macklemore’s recent statements and actions from a rejection of advocacy for the Palestinian people. Kraft highlighted the challenges faced by both the Palestinian and Jewish communities, insisting that a commitment to combating antisemitism does not preclude support for Palestinian rights.

He expressed disappointment at being unable to advocate for Palestine on a large stage but affirmed his commitment to the cause, stating, “If those words cost me the stage, while turning the conversation back to Palestine, then it was the most successful tour I’ve ever been on.”
During his performance at the Loop Tour’s opening in New Jersey, Macklemore publicly stated his support for Palestine, affirming, “Free Palestine!” He expressed that one of his motivations for joining the tour was to amplify this message.
