A tragic sequence of events has left a New Mexico family mourning the loss of two beloved members within just hours of each other. Haylee Gonzalez, a 22-year-old woman, died in a car accident while en route to Roswell to grieve her mother, who was fatally shot in what authorities are treating as a double homicide.

Gonzalez was travelling with her cousin, Noelle Sanchez, a cheerleader at the University of New Mexico. Sanchez survived the crash and is currently hospitalised in critical condition following the collision that occurred on the morning of Tuesday, September 8, near the intersection of westbound Interstate 40 and southbound Interstate 25 in Albuquerque.
Local reports state that a semi-truck failed to stop at a red light, colliding with the passenger side of Gonzalez’s black Audi. While Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene, Sanchez sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The family had intended to head to Roswell to be with relatives following the shocking death of Stacia Pearce, Gonzalez’s mother, who was shot and killed early that same morning, alongside her boyfriend, Tony Joseph Ontiveros, at their home. The Roswell Police Department reported that they had been alerted after a resident heard multiple gunshots around 3 a.m. Officers discovered both victims inside the residence, both suffering from gunshot wounds. A vehicle registered to Pearce was reported stolen from the scene but has since been recovered.
Tula Pearce, cousin to the late Stacia Pearce, expressed the family’s disbelief at the back-to-back tragedies. “All they wanted to do was get back to Roswell to heal, and it’s unfortunate this happened,” she stated. “We’re all kind of in shock because what’s the chance of this happening? Within the span of six hours, the family’s already lost two people.”
