On 12 September, former cast members of the beloved sitcom Wings gathered for a heartfelt reunion at The John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health’s Evening From the Heart LA Gala. The event, held at the Sunset Room in Hollywood, was organised by Amy Yasbeck, who played Casey, sister to Helen, a character portrayed by Crystal Bernard. The panel featured other notable cast members, including Tim Daly, Steven Weber, and Tony Shalhoub.

Yasbeck, now 64 and the widow of John Ritter, felt a mixture of excitement and nerves in the lead-up to the assembly of the show’s cast. Ritter, who passed away unexpectedly on 11 September 2003 due to an aortic dissection, inspired the foundation that Yasbeck established in his memory. Reflecting on the reunion, she expressed delight at the prospect of reconnecting with her former colleagues, stating, “It thrills me. It’s hard to get those boys all in the same room.”

Wings, which aired on NBC from 1990 to 1997, followed the humorous lives of Joe and Brian Hackett, played by Daly and Weber, as they operated a small airline. Shalhoub joined the series during its second season, introducing the character Antonio Scarpacci, a taxi driver who subsequently became a fan favourite.

Despite the absences of Crystal Bernard and other cast members, Yasbeck managed to bring together several key figures for the event. She quipped, “You’ll just have to be satisfied with us,” ensuring that even without a full cast, the reunion captured the essence of their time together. In a light-hearted tone, she advised attendees not to expect the characters to return to life, indicating that the panel would be more of a conversation amongst friends than a performance.

During the evening, the panel, moderated by Variety’s Marc Malkin, included Steven Levitan, a writer and producer associated with the show. Shalhoub spoke warmly of the experience, noting that it had been a long time since the four were gathered in one place. “It’s really nice to have some time to catch up,” he remarked, reminiscing about the enjoyable atmosphere on set, which he described as a daily joy filled with laughter and camaraderie.

Reflecting on the show’s success, Shalhoub remarked on how the sitcom’s charm was felt even beyond the confines of the studio. He recalled: “All of the airport staff, the ticket takers, and the flight attendants… they all were into that show.” This connection often resulted in small perks during his travels, where he would receive upgrades and special treatment due to his association with the show.

While Wings found a solid audience and maintained good ratings throughout its run, the cast did not enjoy the same level of fame as some other contemporaneous sitcoms. Weber acknowledged this reality, stating: “I think we were all very happy and cognizant of the fact that we were working and the show went for nearly eight years, which at the time was really long for any series.” He added that while Wings may not have had the edgy image that garnered flashy headlines, it was nevertheless a “homespun” show that resonated with its viewers.

The event also highlighted the important work of The John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health, which aims to fund research, provide education, and raise awareness concerning thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections. Yasbeck took the opportunity to stress the significance of their mission, stating, “Using Ritter’s case to raise awareness can not only save the generation that you are in and the next one, but the next one and the next one and your cousins and your cousin’s cousins.”
