Uber Enhances Senior Accounts with Increased Accessibility and Independent Management Options

In a significant move to enhance services for older adults, Uber has announced an update to its senior accounts. This change, unveiled on 15 September 2023, allows older users to manage their own rides independently, providing greater control over their travel experience while still offering the option to connect with a family member for support.

Initially launched in the summer of 2022, Uber’s senior accounts were designed for older adults needing assistance from family members. However, feedback from users highlighted a desire for more autonomy. Margarita Peker, Uber’s Director of Family Verticals, explained, “Older adults have different preferences for how they get around, and we want Uber to reflect that.” With this update, seniors now have the choice to manage their own accounts or seek the assistance of family members, emphasising the importance of autonomy in their travel decisions.

The new features introduced with this update aim to enhance the user experience further. Senior account holders will have access to a dedicated settings page where they can customise various options, including how drivers should signal upon arrival. Users can now select preferences such as having drivers call them, send a message, or beep the horn, tailoring their ride experience to their comfort level.

Moreover, the update will automatically activate Uber’s Simple mode for senior users. This mode features enlarged text and clearer icons, facilitating a more accessible interface for older riders. Another noteworthy addition is the option for seniors to identify themselves as older adults to drivers. If activated, this information will be displayed in the driver’s app as they approach, ensuring that drivers have adequate context before they arrive.

In addition to these individual enhancements, Uber is piloting a new feature aimed at riders with mobility challenges. The Easy Entry Vehicles initiative allows users to request vehicles with lower step-in heights, making it easier for those with mobility difficulties to access transport. Currently, this pilot is being rolled out across nine US cities, including Miami, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco, with accessibility options integrated into the senior account settings.

For seniors who prefer to maintain a connection with a family organizer, the updated features still allow for collaborative trip management. Family members can track their loved one’s journeys, add preferred destinations, and contact drivers directly. Additionally, senior users will continue to have access to vital safety features, such as the ability to call emergency services and round-the-clock support.

This update follows closely on the heels of another recent announcement from Uber regarding enhancements made to their teen accounts. Introduced on 25 August 2023, this new feature allows parents and guardians to view live video footage from their teen’s ride in real time. It ensures that guardians are notified when their teen’s trip begins and grants them the ability to monitor the journey through the front-facing camera on the driver’s smartphone.

The live video feature is designed to provide parents with peace of mind, allowing them to see their child’s journey unfold. However, both the driver and the teen are informed when the livestream is being accessed, and the video automatically ceases once the trip concludes. Uber emphasises that these streams are encrypted, ensuring that only linked guardians can see the video during an active journey, while recordings are securely stored and accessible only in the event of a reported safety issue.

With these recent updates, Uber aims to cater to the unique needs of older adults and teenagers alike. By prioritising accessibility and independence within its services, the company strives to improve the overall user experience for these demographics. As the ride-hailing giant continues to innovate, the focus remains on enhancing safety, convenience, and user control in daily transportation.
