In an era where technology seamlessly integrates into everyday life, iconic actress Helen Mirren has revealed her unconventional approach to health management at the Toronto International Film Festival. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 81-year-old star of “A Talent for Murder” disclosed her preference for consulting artificial intelligence over traditional medical practices, branding the technology as “amazing”.
Mirren’s comments came as she discussed health anxieties with her co-stars Alden Ehrenreich and Olivia Cooke, both of whom described themselves as self-professed hypochondriacs. In contrast, Mirren characterised herself as the polar opposite, playfully declaring, “I ought to be diagnosed with the opposite of hypochondria, I just completely ignore everything.”

The conversation took a light-hearted turn when Ehrenreich inquired about the Oscar-winning actress’s relationship with medical professionals. Mirren candidly admitted, “I totally deny. I avoid doctors. Oh no, totally. And it’s working.” This audacious avoidance of healthcare has resulted in a uniquely entrepreneurial attitude towards her well-being.

Ehrenreich, who seemed to relish the idea of having a doctor constantly at arm’s reach, was met with Mirren’s witty retort: “Well, you do. It’s called AI.” She enthusiastically praised the role of artificial intelligence in personal health management, quipping, “You know, AI is amazing. ‘It hurts, but it doesn’t hurt that much!’ Oh, it’s incredible.”
Despite her reluctance to visit healthcare professionals, Mirren has managed to maintain her health effectively over the years, attributing her well-being largely to dietary choices and regular exercise. In a previous interview with Vogue, she advocated for taking charge of one’s diet to enhance overall wellness. She remarked, “First of all, take control of your diet and find one that makes you feel good.”
While admitting her fondness for indulgent treats, such as fish and chips, Mirren underlined the importance of nutritional balance, noting how diet directly influences one’s self-perception. “What you’re putting inside your body does influence how you feel about yourself, so start there,” she explained.
Exercise has also been a cornerstone of Mirren’s health regimen. The actress revealed her adherence to the Canadian Air Force’s XBX exercise routine for the past 60 years. This accessible 12-minute workout features ten basic exercises designed to engage all muscle groups. She described the programme as structured to accommodate all fitness levels: “It is an exercise regime that starts from very low and easy, then if you follow it through, it can become quite difficult.”
While Mirren admitted she hasn’t progressed beyond the second level of the exercise plan, she emphasised that its purpose is not about intensity but rather consistency, saying, “It’s a nice little exercise programme. Nothing extreme, but you need to do it every day. That’s a great start, because it’s all to do with taking control of yourself.”
The actress, however, was honest about her inclinations as she described herself as “incredibly lazy,” confessing that she often prefers to avoid physical activity. “If I can avoid doing it, I will,” she said, but added that she makes a concerted effort to engage in exercises that she knows are beneficial.
Mirren’s refreshing outlook on health challenges conventional thinking around the necessity of frequent doctor visits. Instead, she highlights self-management through diet and regular but manageable exercise, alongside the strategic use of technology. Her unique philosophy continues to resonate with many, sparking discussions about the evolving relationship between healthcare and the digital age.
As she continues to thrive in both her personal life and career, Helen Mirren serves as a striking example of how a blend of personal insight, innovative technology, and disciplined lifestyle choices can contribute to long term health and vitality.
