After His Cockpit Window Shattered at 32,000 Feet, a Heroic Captain Saved 119 Lives by Manually Landing Jet in Sub-Zero Temperatures

In a remarkable display of professionalism and composure, Captain Liu Chuanjian of Sichuan Airlines has been hailed a hero following a dangerous incident that occurred aboard Flight 8633 in May 2018. On that fateful day, the aircraft encountered a catastrophic malfunction when its cockpit windshield shattered, resulting in a chaotic scenario that could have had disastrous consequences.

The flight, which took off from Chongqing in Southwest China, was en route to Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, when the right windshield unexpectedly burst at an altitude of around 32,000 feet. According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, the sudden loss of cabin pressure triggered the deployment of oxygen masks, while the plane plummeted by approximately 24,000 feet. At that moment, passengers who were being served breakfast found themselves in utter disarray amid the collapsing atmosphere.

As chaos unfolded, Liu, the captain, faced startling events in the cockpit. He recounted the harrowing moments to local media, explaining how the explosion of the windshield was accompanied by a loud bang. “The next thing I knew, my co-pilot had been sucked halfway out,” Liu disclosed, underscoring that there was “no warning” preceding the incident.

Fortunately for the co-pilot, who was remarkably secured by his seatbelt, the tragedy was not fully realised. Despite being partially ejected from the cockpit, he ultimately survived the ordeal, unlike many who might have succumbed to the vacuum created in such conditions. However, it wasn’t without complications; the drastic change in pressure rendered many of the aircraft’s essential systems inoperable.

Reports suggested that temperatures within the cabin plunged to between minus 30 to minus 40 degrees Celsius. Amid such treacherous conditions, Captain Liu faced multiple equipment failures and considerable turbulence. “Many devices malfunctioned and the plane was jolting strongly. It was very difficult to control,” he reflected in a subsequent interview. Despite these challenges, Liu’s calm leadership was instrumental in navigating the crisis.

Inside the cabin, passengers reacted to the tumultuous situation with a mix of panic and confusion. Items were reportedly thrown about as flight attendants struggled to maintain their footing, with at least one attendant sustaining an injury during the chaotic descent. The circumstances, although alarming, were managed without further serious injury, emphasising the crew’s ability to act under pressure.

Ultimately, Captain Liu successfully executed an emergency landing at Chengdu’s Shuangliu International Airport. Out of the 119 people aboard, only 29 were treated for minor injuries and subsequently discharged. Remarkably, the co-pilot, who had endured such a harrowing experience, escaped with only a few scratches and a sprained wrist, thanks to his quick thinking in securing himself.

The incident garnered widespread acclaim for the crew’s rapid response and skill. After the emergency was resolved, the Civil Aviation Administration of China publicly commended Liu and his team, describing their actions as “level-headed” and reflecting on their decisive measures that helped avert a serious catastrophe. According to them, this episode exemplified the crew’s exceptional technical skills and professionalism in handling emergencies.

More than eight years later, Captain Liu Chuanjian remains a symbol of heroism in the aviation community, revered not just for his actions on May 14, 2018, but also for the lessons learned from this remarkable incident.
