Woman, 51, Dies After Undergoing 6 Cosmetic Procedures, Including Facelift and Liposuction, During 8-Hour Surgery

A tragic incident involving a Brazilian woman has sparked concern over medical practices in cosmetic surgery, following her death shortly after a complex procedure. Fifty-one-year-old Andreia Vieira Gaspar lost her life on August 12 after undergoing an extensive facial plastic surgery that lasted more than eight hours.

Gaspar had travelled from Spain, where she resided for the past five years, to undertake the surgery at the hands of Dr. Lessandro Martins in Goiânia, Brazil. Reports indicate that she underwent six different procedures including a facelift, blepharoplasty, liposuction, and fat grafting. The total cost for these operations was approximately 118,000 Brazilian Real, equivalent to around £22,918, which Gaspar reportedly spent two years saving for.

Following the surgery, Gaspar’s sister, Djiane Vieira, raised alarm over her sister’s deteriorating condition. She claimed that Gaspar experienced severe breathing difficulties due to a swollen tongue, which her family reported to the medical team through a group message. Vieira’s desperate pleas for assistance went allegedly unanswered, contributing to growing concerns about the standard of care provided by the hospital post-surgery.

The distressing situation escalated when Gaspar’s family asserted that the Ankar Hospital lacked an intensive care unit (ICU) and ambulatory services for emergencies. Djiane Vieira recounted the anguish of witnessing her sister’s passing in her arms, two hours after attempts to revive her began. In an emotional Instagram post, she expressed her grief and the urgent need for accountability regarding the circumstances surrounding Gaspar’s death.

She stated, “I have the right to question my sister’s death… Nobody who wasn’t there knows what Andreia went through. Nobody feels the pain we’re experiencing. And that’s exactly why I won’t shut up.” Her statements reflect an anguished call for answers and justice, as the family grapples with their loss.

In response to the family’s allegations, a legal representative for Ankar Hospital issued a statement asserting that Gaspar received “immediate emergency care” and that the hospital acted appropriately in response to her medical needs. The lawyer clarified that the required pre-operative evaluations were conducted prior to Gaspar’s arrival, amidst claims that she had a bacterial infection before the surgery took place.
