The North Carolina home of former NASCAR driver Dave Marcis was the site of a burglary in August, with valuable and sentimental possessions taken while the 85-year-old racing icon was away. The burglary occurred on August 28, as Marcis was travelling in his home state of Wisconsin, and has since led to the arrest of two individuals in connection with the crime.

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) provided details of the incident in a press release issued on September 11, stating that deputies responded to Marcis’ residence in Arden to investigate reports of a break-in. While the precise items stolen were not disclosed in the initial report, local news outlet WBTV indicated that the break-in involved only high-value items.
Sharing the news on social media, Johnny Ponder, a friend of Marcis, provided insights into the type of items that were taken. He revealed that the thieves stole various racing memorabilia, including engraved knives commemorating past Winston Cup Championship drivers, as well as personal firearms and jewellery that held significant sentimental value for Marcis.
Law enforcement quickly mobilised following the burglary and collaborated with the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO). Two suspects, Hailey Bowlin and Cameron Samotis, were identified and subsequently charged in connection with the theft. Bowlin, who was arrested on September 2 for a probation violation related to a prior conviction of possessing stolen goods, was later charged with several offences including second-degree burglary and firearms-related charges.
Samotis was apprehended on September 9 after he was charged with second-degree burglary a day earlier. Both suspects were taken to the Henderson County Detention Center, although it remains unclear whether they have retained legal representation.
According to the BCSO, a substantial portion of the items stolen from Marcis’ home has been recovered, although specific details regarding what has been returned have not been disclosed. The investigation continues as authorities work to retrieve remaining stolen property.
Since the burglary, Marcis has expressed gratitude for the support he has received from the community. His official Facebook account, managed by his daughter, relayed Ponder’s post shortly after the incident, stating that some items had been recovered and expressing hope that more would be identified in the future. The account also acknowledged the role that public awareness played in the recovery efforts, noting that a local resident reached out to Marcis after purchasing some of the stolen guns at a flea market.
Despite the ongoing investigation, many details surrounding the burglary remain under wraps. The BCSO has yet to provide additional information about the theft and the specific items that were taken from the racing legend’s home.
