They first crossed paths in 1991 when Allen performed heart surgery on Smith’s father. Just two years later, he accepted a job in Chicago, setting the stage for a prolonged period of long-distance romance.

“Living apart for so long was challenging, but it also had its silver linings,” Smith explained. “When you only have a weekend together, you make every moment count.” During those years, Smith managed to balance her commitments as a mother of two while Allen did the bulk of the travelling to ensure they could see each other regularly.

The couple married in 1997, years after their initial meeting. Smith has praised Allen for his unwavering support during her difficult battle with breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2002. “His struggles with alcohol and drugs became overwhelming,” she commented. “I couldn’t cope with the impact it had on our lives.” Nevertheless, she expressed admiration for Richmond, acknowledging that he is now sober and has made significant strides in his life. “I respect him, and I’m glad he is doing better,” she affirmed.

Despite her past experiences, Smith feels that she has finally found true companionship and happiness with Allen. Reflecting on her current relationship, she exclaims, “I got a great husband, a wonderful marriage, and the most fantastic stepfather I could ever dream of.”
