Joanna Gaines, co-founder of the lifestyle brand Magnolia, recently shared insights during her appearance on Hoda Kotb’s podcast, Joy 101. Together with her husband Chip, they established Magnolia back in 2003, and for nearly 25 years have been at the forefront of lifestyle branding in the United States. The couple undertook a three-month hiatus from their burgeoning business, providing them with the much-needed opportunity to reflect on their journey and the potential for burnout.

In the podcast discussion, Joanna opened up about the relentless pace at which they had been operating. She recalled that following their successful HGTV show “Fixer Upper,” which aired its final episode in 2018, the couple continued to pour their energies into Magnolia without pause. “Chip and I have been doing this business for almost 25 years,” she explained, noting that the constant state of activity left them feeling detached from their original vision.

In an effort to reconnect with their initial purpose, Joanna and Chip decided to step back temporarily. “We stopped seeing vision… we stopped remembering like, ‘Why are we doing this?’” Joanna admitted. Recognising the absence of clarity in their work motivated them to initiate a break from their relentless schedule; a decision they grappled with, knowing it would affect their team and the many projects they had in motion.
Reflecting on the difficult choice to take time away from their enterprise, Joanna stated, “I remember thinking, ‘Okay, we’re going to take the summer off,’” acknowledging that such a decision was not without its repercussions. “It cost us something,” she added. However, the break proved invaluable, allowing the couple the space to reflect on the foundations of their enterprise and the reasons behind their hard work.
Joanna noted that this hiatus was not just about relaxation, but rather about gaining clarity. The time away prompted serious contemplation on their motivations and intentions, providing insights necessary to revitalise their vision for the future. “That three months was time for us to go, ‘We need a break. We need clarity,’” she said, underscoring the importance of a mental reset in a high-pressure environment.
Furthermore, Joanna’s experience highlighted the necessity of recognising early signs of burnout. “Once you start realising those moments of maybe burnout, you never really want to experience that again,” she pointed out. This realisation has instigated a new discipline – adopting daily practices to be aware of her mental health and the potential onset of stress.
The couple recently celebrated two decades of Magnolia, with the brand having transformed into a multifaceted lifestyle empire that encompasses a vast array of products and services. From television programming to physical locations such as stores, restaurants, and hotels, their influence stretches far and wide. Joanna and Chip have also delved into publishing, producing books, a quarterly magazine, and various product lines.
Looking ahead, Magnolia seems poised for continued growth, as evidenced by the upcoming annual fall Silobration festival in Waco, Texas. This year marks the eleventh edition of the event, which is set to host an array of live performances, seasonal activities, and over 90 vendors. Taking place in their hometown, this festival reflects the community spirit that lies at the heart of Magnolia’s identity.
Through their journey, Joanna and Chip Gaines’ ability to reflect on their work-life balance underscores a universal truth about the importance of mental health in the fast-paced world of business. Their insights may serve as a reminder to others about the value of stepping back and reassessing life’s priorities, ensuring the longevity of both creativity and well-being in any endeavour.
