Howard’s body was recovered from the Little Calumet River just one day after the vehicle she was travelling in plunged into the water on 9 September. Her family expressed their dismay, alleging that the search efforts were abruptly halted due to darkness, prompting friends of Howard to conduct their own search.

Following the incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning on 8 September, a Chevrolet Trailblazer with five adult occupants lost control and crashed through a guardrail into the river. Local police confirmed that the driver received a citation for failing to reduce speed. Initially, authorities did not release the names of the victims involved, but local media later identified Howard and her 24-year-old friend Trumayne Sanders, who also perished as a result of the accident.
The Chicago Police Department confirmed that Howard’s body was recovered from the river at approximately 10:48 a.m. on 9 September. Although one of her friends, Kmauri Burnett, managed to locate her body within a minute of entering the water, concerns about the search efforts linger. Howard’s sister, Brianna Cummings, remarked on the family’s frustration with the police’s decision to suspend their search simply because it was dark, saying, “I feel like they stopped their search and just gave up.”
The swift actions of Burnett and her companions have raised questions about the effectiveness of the search conducted by authorities. Cummings expressed her disbelief that local police had failed to locate Howard’s body, given that she was found in close proximity to the submerged vehicle. “She was right there where they pulled the car,” Cummings stated. “Y’all didn’t see her? Y’all didn’t look?”
In addition to concerns about the search, Howard’s family highlighted the condition of the roadway where the crash occurred. They reported that a damaged guardrail was present at the crash site, claiming that proper maintenance could have prevented the incident. Cummings stated, “I feel like if the railing was fixed it would have just been a car crash — she would have still been here with us.” The family is now advocating for improved safety measures in the area, including better lighting and more effective signage.
While the search for Howard was called off, Sanders was rescued from the vehicle shortly after the incident and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The fate of the other occupants was more fortunate; three survived the crash, including the driver, whose identities have not been publicly disclosed.
