In a noteworthy update, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creators renowned for their work on the animated series South Park, have provided new information regarding their collaboration with acclaimed rapper Kendrick Lamar on an upcoming musical film. Initially slated for release on 4 July 2025, the project, reportedly titled Whitney Springs, remains under wraps, with its release timeline proving elusive.

The film, which is said to have a budget exceeding £100 million, will feature Lamar as a producer. It centres on a contemporary narrative set against the backdrop of a historical plantation museum in the Midwest, focusing on the conflicts between a young Black man and the town’s mayor, a role that Parker himself is set to portray.

In a recent statement to The Ankler, a media outlet that covers the entertainment industry, Parker and Stone addressed the film’s protracted development. They acknowledged the delays, attributing them to various circumstances, including the demands of both their work on South Park and personal matters. Despite these setbacks, the duo expressed their unwavering belief in the film and their appreciation for the patience shown by their partners at Paramount Pictures and Lamar’s own production company, pgLang.

Originally scheduled for a summer release, the film’s premiere was postponed to March 20, 2026. However, it was later removed entirely from Paramount’s upcoming project schedule, signaling uncertainties about its future. Representatives of Paramount have so far been unavailable for comment regarding this matter.
Whitney Springs represents the first feature film directed by Parker and Stone since their 2004 release, Team America: World Police. Additionally, the duo is known for their previous directorial ventures, including the 1997 film Orgazmo and the 1993 project Cannibal! The Musical. Beyond film work, Parker and Stone also gained acclaim for co-creating the hit Broadway musical The Book of Mormon, alongside Robert Lopez.
As it stands, details regarding casting remain scarce, but reports indicate that the screenplay was penned by Vernon Chatman, a producer associated with South Park. Parker and Stone’s production company, Park County, has issued a statement affirming their commitment to completing the film, highlighting that they are diligently working on its final stages.
Speaking at CinemaCon in 2024, former Paramount executive Brian Robbins previously described the script as “one of the funniest and most original scripts we’ve ever read.” Robbins departed from Paramount last year following the merger between Skydance and the media company.
Kendrick Lamar is no stranger to the film world, having made appearances in several projects, including the 2022 short film We Cry Together and the 2023 release Into the AI Multiverse Movie 1. With Whitney Springs, Lamar is set to make his debut as a feature film producer, marking a significant milestone in his career trajectory.
As fans and industry observers await further developments, the project’s status remains a topic of keen interest. The combination of Parker and Stone’s distinct comedic voice alongside Kendrick Lamar’s influential musical talents has generated considerable anticipation, underscoring the potential of Whitney Springs as a project with both artistic depth and mainstream appeal.
