On September 9, the academic journal Insect Systematics and Evolution published a study detailing the discovery of twelve novel species of plant-eating insects, which has led to the creation of the new genus, Swiftiephylus. This genus incorporates four distinct species that have been given Latin names drawn from the artist’s works, including Swiftiephylus taylorae, named after Swift herself, and others referencing her albums, namely Swiftiephylus amator (Lover), Swiftiephylus intrepidus (Fearless), and Swiftiephylus poetorum (The Tortured Poets Department).

Dr. Sarah Schroeder, a doctoral student in entomology at UCR and a co-author of the study, expressed her motivation for honouring the musician. “As a lifelong Swiftie, it felt authentic to me to honour Taylor in this way and raise awareness about the diversity of insects that remains undiscovered,” she remarked. The scientific community views this gesture as a novel fusion of popular culture and entomological research.

Schroeder was particularly struck by the physical traits of the new insects, which bear a resemblance to Swift’s iconic appearance. The specimens that led to the identification of Swiftiephylus were collected between 1995 and 2004 by researchers from the American Museum of Natural History in collaboration with Australian scientists. This extensive collection includes over 50,000 specimens, but experts believe that approximately 30 million insect species are still unrecorded. By adding the new genus, the researchers contribute to the wider understanding of the largest family of true bugs—Miridae—which encompasses 11,000 described species globally.
In the broader context of scientific honours, Swift’s accolade comes four years after UCR scientists similarly celebrated actor Jeff Daniels by naming a worm species after him. His character from the film Arachnophobia inspired the nematode species Tarantobelus jeffdanielsi, a nod to his connection with the film’s theme.
