High School Student Expected to Survive ‘Medical Emergency’ After Ingesting Mixture of Toxic Chemicals

A 15-year-old student at Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland, Oregon, has been hospitalised in critical condition after inhaling toxic gases produced during a chemical mixing incident. The event, which transpired on Tuesday, 8 September, led to the evacuation of the school as authorities responded to the medical emergency.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, the student, whose identity has not been disclosed, mixed unspecified chemicals that resulted in hazardous fumes. Contrary to initial reports suggesting the boy had ingested the chemicals, police clarified that he had inhaled the gasses created by the mixture. Portland Police Chief Bob Day, who addressed the media on Wednesday, 9 September, stated that the teenager is expected to survive the incident.

During the press conference, Superintendent Kimberlee Armstrong expressed her gratitude to the school staff and Principal Curtis Wilson Jr. for their prompt actions in evacuating the premises. She commended the orderly conduct of the students during the emergency, highlighting the importance of safety in the school environment.

Armstrong also noted that while classes were cancelled for the day following the incident, arrangements had been made for students to collect their personal belongings, and classes would resume as normal the following day. The hazardous materials team had cleaned the affected areas, and air testing confirmed it was safe for occupancy.
