On the day of the incident, with her mother incapacitated, little Emi turned to technology for assistance. Using FaceTime, she reached out to her grandparents, who are based over 700 miles away in Georgia. Her grandparents promptly contacted the emergency services, initiating a response while remaining on the line with the young girl.

During this tense situation, Emi displayed remarkable poise for her age. She unlocked the door and guided the first responders to their apartment, showing an impressive understanding of the urgency of the situation. As her grandparents provided guidance over the video call, they had previously prepared her for emergencies just like this one, which helped her navigate the tricky circumstances.

Wilkie, recalling the harrowing episode, noted that one of her vivid memories was her daughter tenderly rubbing her hair and reassuring her, saying, “Mommy, it’s gonna be okay.” These moments highlighted the close bond between mother and daughter, even amidst chaos.
The 911 recording reveals the extent of Emi’s determination. Her grandfather mentioned how she was attempting to unlock the front door using a chair to reach the deadbolt, prompting the dispatcher to commend the young girl’s efforts. “Oh my goodness. She’s doing so good,” the dispatcher remarked, reflecting the astonishment and admiration for her bravery.
When paramedics from UT Health East Texas arrived at the scene, they were keenly aware of Emi’s efforts to secure their entry. EMT Tim Spurgeon shared that they were anxiously searching for her, as they had been informed she was instrumental in guiding them. “We kept getting told, ‘She’s here! She’s here!’” Spurgeon stated, labelling Emi’s actions as “very courageous and very brave.”
Following the resolution of the emergency, Emi was celebrated for her heroism. During a recognition ceremony, she was presented with a certificate, a cuddly teddy bear, and a toy stethoscope. This was not only a moment for the community to praise her bravery but also a heartfelt gesture that acknowledged the extraordinary actions of a little girl under extreme pressure.
Wilkie expressed immense pride in her daughter, proclaiming, “She is for sure my hero above anything else.” The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness in emergencies and highlights the remarkable resilience that even young children can exhibit.
Emi’s story has garnered attention from various media outlets, demonstrating how moments of crisis can bring out extraordinary heroism from unexpected places. It also emphasises the significance of communication and family support during emergencies, proving that knowing what to do in critical moments can truly make a difference.
