Musical artist Lizzo has released her debut children’s book, “Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’,” which features a unique blend of storytelling and music. This vibrant tale, illustrated by Mark Pett and published by Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, tells the story of a young girl who mirrors many aspects of Lizzo’s own childhood, including her signature afro-puffs and love for Jordans.

At the heart of the narrative is a spirited little girl, Lil Lizzo, who longs for acceptance. Her journey begins when she encounters Sasha B. Flootin’, a clever flute in search of its melody. Together, they embark on a fantastical adventure through diverse sound-filled environments such as jungles, oceans, and even outer space. The book offers not just a story but also a message about the magic of friendship and the importance of self-discovery.

Lizzo describes the book as a celebration of music’s power in helping children connect with others. She draws parallels between her life and Lil Lizzo’s story, emphasizing how her flute helped her find her voice and establish lasting friendships. “My flute really helped me fit in and find my best friends,” Lizzo shared. “I wanted young people to share that experience with me—to find their own voice and their own adventures.”
The singer vividly recalls her experiences in a marching band, likening those relationships to a family. She remarked, “It was the only thing that mattered,” highlighting how their shared passion provided comfort in the tough moments of school life. Lizzo believes that musical programmes foster meaningful connections, which are increasingly essential for young people today.
In addition to creating bonds, Lizzo points out the cognitive benefits of learning music from a young age. She noted that reading sheet music can significantly enhance comprehension and mathematical skills. “I could do a whole TED talk on this,” she remarked, underlining her commitment to promoting the benefits of music education.
Lizzo’s ambition to write this children’s book reflects a long-held personal dream. She confided that as a child, her aspiration was to pen the “Great American Novel” and emulate the iconic composer John Williams. In this new venture, she combines storytelling with her musical talent by including an original song in the book, accessible via a QR code. “It has the buoyancy and rhythm of a John Williams anthem,” Lizzo explained, aiming to create a multisensory experience that envelops the reader in the narrative.
The process of finalising the book was an emotional one for the artist. While reviewing the proofs, Lizzo found herself deeply moved by the opportunity to include meaningful lessons she wished she had as a child. “It was an honour to infuse breathwork and mindfulness into this story, allowing young readers to learn the value of pausing and breathing,” she added.
Furthermore, Lizzo aims to address a question she frequently encounters in interviews: the significance of the flute in her musical identity. By sharing her experiences through the character Sasha B. Flootin’, she hopes to provide insightful answers about her journey and love for the instrument.
“Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin'” is now available at booksellers nationwide. Through this project, Lizzo not only shares her artistic expression but also offers inspiration to young readers, encouraging them to explore their creativity and forge connections. As she embarks on this new chapter, Lizzo aspires for this book to be just the beginning of her literary career, with many more stories and lessons to come.
In an era when digital interactions are prevalent, Lizzo’s narrative stands as a reminder of music’s potential to foster genuine relationships and creative expression among children. As she puts it, “I hope this book inspires young readers to not only find their voice but to also embrace the joy of friendship.”
