A Texas father has expressed his distress after receiving a phone call from his 17-year-old daughter, who was involved in a serious car crash during a police pursuit. The incident unfolded on the evening of 5 September on Interstate 30 in Grand Prairie, igniting concerns about the implications of high-speed chases on innocent bystanders.

Ben Guthrie shared that his daughter was a passenger in a vehicle that became caught in the chaos of the police chase, leaving her car upside down. He recounted the frightening moment, saying his daughter experienced a terrifying 30 to 45 seconds dangling from her seatbelt before being rescued by a nearby bystander.

The chain of events began when local police officers observed an accident at around 10:45 PM. According to reports, a vehicle collided with another before fleeing southbound on State Highway 360. The police promptly initiated a pursuit, with the suspect’s vehicle ultimately heading east on Interstate 30.

As a result of the driver’s reckless behaviour, multiple vehicles were involved in a subsequent crash. Authorities confirmed that at least seven individuals sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and required medical attention. Among those taken to hospital were Guthrie’s daughter and her two friends, who had been returning home from a concert at the time of the incident.
Describing the scene he encountered upon arrival, Guthrie stated that he was shocked to find his daughter’s car overturned and thrown about 30 feet from the road. “It was unlike any crash I’ve ever seen,” he remarked, highlighting the chaos that ensued. His daughter was reported to be shaken but ultimately in stable condition after undergoing a CT scan for potential internal injuries.
In a statement to Fox affiliate KDFW, Guthrie reflected on the disconnect between how car chases are portrayed in media and the reality faced by those caught in the crossfire. “You see the news and think it’s interesting, rooting for the good guys and bad guys, but you don’t consider the people around them — one of whom was my child,” he said, articulating his frustration about his daughter being an unintended participant in the chase.
Further investigation by the Grand Prairie Police Department revealed that the driver who instigated the police pursuit was found to be intoxicated. The suspect has since been arrested and faces charges that include driving while intoxicated, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and causing injury through a collision.
This incident has raised significant concerns about the safety implications of police chases, particularly their potential to endanger innocent lives. As police pursuits continue to attract media attention, questions linger regarding the measures that can be taken to prevent such outcomes.
Authorities have not yet responded to further inquiries from various news outlets, leaving many to ponder the actions taken during high-stakes situations involving police chases. Meanwhile, the Guthrie family is now focused on recovery, relieved that despite the severity of the incident, their daughter escaped with minor injuries. The ordeal serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with reckless driving and the unintended consequences it can have on the community.
