A juvenile has sustained injuries from an alligator bite while swimming in the Weeki Wachee Preserve in Florida, prompting a strong warning from authorities regarding swimming in restricted areas. The incident occurred on the 7th of September 2026 and has raised concerns about safety in natural waterways.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, the unidentified minor was engaged in swimming activities when the encounter with the alligator took place. The young swimmer was in the company of other minors and became isolated on a sandbar during the incident. First responders, including Hernando County Fire Rescue, promptly arrived at the scene to provide assistance.
The victim was reported to have suffered puncture wounds to the arm and leg but fortunately these injuries were classified as non-life-threatening. Following immediate medical attention at the site, the juvenile was transported to Bayonet Point Hospital for further treatment.
In response to the incident, authorities gauged the size of the alligator involved to be between nine and twelve feet long. This prompted the involvement of a licensed wildlife trapper, who was dispatched to the preserve to set traps in an effort to capture the animal. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has also begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including an alleged violation of swimming regulations.
Officials have taken this opportunity to remind the public about safety guidelines when it comes to natural waterways. “For your safety, please use extreme caution around waterways and follow all posted rules and restrictions,” the sheriff’s office stated in a press release. They emphasised that individuals should refrain from swimming in areas where it is prohibited.
Statistics released by the FWC indicate that there were 13 alligator bite incidents across Florida in 2025, two of which were fatal. This data underscores the potential dangers present in the state’s waterways, especially in areas known to harbour alligators.
Weeki Wachee Preserve is nestled in Central West Florida and spans an impressive 11,206 acres, according to the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The preserve offers a variety of recreational activities such as bird watching, cycling, boating, fishing, and picnicking, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.
