Despite his youth, Alex has already made a name for himself on the international tennis scene. His father, Erik, remarked, “He’s believed this was all gonna happen the way it’s happened. We, as parents, didn’t quite see that, but I think Alex did.” This prescient view reflects the confidence Alex has in his abilities, setting a high bar for himself from a young age.

My dad likes to serve and volley, come to the net and be more creative, so I took that from him. Despite initially hoping he would attend the University of Georgia, where he was accepted, she understood that for Alex, pursuing the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour made more sense. With Alex having already achieved a world ranking of No. 140, she recognised that focusing on a professional career was more beneficial than college competition. “There wasn’t one college player at that time even close to that,” she added, reiterating her support for his choice.
Sondra also played a crucial part in Alex’s early development as a tennis player, being his first coach. They shared warm memories of training together. Reflecting on her son’s successes, she said, “He always surprises me. I’m like, maybe just win one round and then he wins a tournament. He still surprises me now with what he’s doing on the tour.” This unwavering support continues to uplift Alex, although it sometimes means staying away from the stadiums where he competes.
During the 2023 US Open, Sondra and Erik chose to remain at home to care for their family dog, Holly, opting not to attend Alex’s matches. Addressing their decision in an interview, Sondra revealed Alex’s concerns about their well-being during his games, stating, “He doesn’t really like us going too much because he says he worries about us too much.”
Despite their physical absence at events, the Michelsen parents are ever-present in spirit. After a match at the 2025 Australian Open, Alex acknowledged Sondra’s vital role in his journey, remarking in a post-match interview, “I’m sure she’s watching… no chance I’d be here without her.
