A former Team USA triathlete, Spencer Korwin, has tragically drowned during a family holiday in New York. Korwin, aged 38, was reported missing after he failed to return from a morning swim off The Pridwin Hotel dock on Shelter Island. The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 2, when Korwin decided to go for a swim while staying at the hotel with his family. When he did not return hours later, his wife grew concerned and alerted the hotel staff, who promptly contacted emergency services. A search operation was initiated, focusing on the Crescent Beach-North Channel area and its surrounding waterways.
According to reports from the Shelter Island Police Department, Korwin’s drowning is believed to be accidental, although an investigation is currently ongoing. Detective Sergeant Jack Thilberg stated there were no initial indications suggesting foul play, but further enquiries will continue to be pursued.
The search operation, which commenced shortly after Korwin was reported missing, involved multiple agencies. John Kirincic, a master mariner with Southold Town Police’s Marine One unit, reported that the weather conditions on the day of the incident posed no unusual challenges, noting there was neither fog nor severe weather. However, he highlighted that the waters in the area can experience strong currents, particularly because of the narrow passage where tides flow, which may have contributed to the tragic accident.
Korwin was a notable figure in the triathlon community, having represented Team USA and been sponsored by Gatorade since 2012. He earned his degree from Syracuse University in 2010 and was well regarded among his peers for his athletic achievements. He leaves behind a grieving family, including his wife and two young daughters, four-year-old Sadie and one-year-old Colette. In a heartfelt acknowledgment of his life, local reports indicate that Korwin’s funeral service is scheduled for Sunday, September 6, at Temple Israel, followed by burial at Beth Moses Jewish Cemetery in West Babylon.
