The story of iconic rapper Snoop Dogg is set to be told on the big screen, with a new biopic titled “Snoop” scheduled for release on 6 August 2027. This project follows the rapper’s announcement in November 2022 that he would produce a film chronicling his extraordinary life and career. The movie represents the first collaboration between Universal Pictures and Snoop’s production company, Death Row Pictures, a division of the legendary Death Row Records that Snoop acquired earlier that same year.

Donna Langley, chair of NBCUniversal Entertainment, commented on the venture by stating that Snoop Dogg is one of the most impactful figures in modern culture, expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity to create a film documenting his legacy. She described it as an honour to capture the story of such a distinctive artist.

Craig Brewer, known for his work on “Song Sung Blue,” will direct the film from a screenplay he has rewritten, originally penned by Joe Robert Cole, a co-writer for the acclaimed Marvel films “Black Panther” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Following a period of minimal updates, excitement around the production rekindled in June 2025 when Jonathan Daviss was confirmed to portray Snoop Dogg himself.
Over the past few years, news regarding “Snoop” had been scarce until the recent casting announcements began to surface. Jonathan Daviss reflected on his experience, revealing that the audition process was extensive, with Snoop himself being actively involved. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in August 2026, Daviss remarked on the unique opportunity to connect with the living legend throughout the casting process, a rarity in biographical filmmaking.
In addition to Daviss, the film’s ensemble cast includes Myles Bullock as Dr. Dre, who significantly influenced Snoop’s career by signing him to Death Row Records and featuring him on his 1992 album, “The Chronic.” Bullock expressed excitement about portraying such a pivotal figure, sharing on social media that he was proud to bring this story to life alongside those already involved.
The roster continues with Camron Jones as Tupac Shakur, reflecting the strong friendship and collaboration between the two artists during their time at Death Row. Jones shared his gratitude for being cast, acknowledging the honour of portraying such an important character in Snoop’s life.
Another key character is Snoop’s mother, Beverly Tate, played by actress Lauren London. Tate, a church choir director, greatly influenced Snoop’s life and career. Her affectionate nickname for Snoop, drawn from the character Snoopy in the beloved Peanuts cartoons, is a pivotal element of his origin story.
Laya DeLeon Hayes will portray Shante Broadus, Snoop’s wife, who he met as a teenager in high school. The couple has remained a staple in each other’s lives since their marriage in 1997 and share three children together. Hayes expressed her joy and honour in participating in this project, calling it a dream come true.
Adding to the dynamic cast, Tre Hale has been cast as Suge Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records. Their relationship was historically complex, characterised by a close professional partnership that later soured before Snoop left the label. Hale, known for his role in “Nemesis,” has also expressed his appreciation for the chance to portray Knight.
Other noteworthy cast members include Algee Smith as Warren G and Corey Champagne as Nate Dogg, both integral figures in Snoop Dogg’s early career as part of the hip-hop group 213. Smith and Champagne are tasked with highlighting the friendships and collaborations that forged Snoop’s musical beginnings.
With each casting decision and announcement, anticipation for “Snoop” continues to grow. As the production gears up for its release in 2027, fans and viewers alike are eager to witness the portrayal of one of music’s most significant figures as he navigates the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of his legendary life. The film promises to offer an insight into Snoop Dogg’s enduring impact on the music industry and culture as a whole, making it an exciting addition to the genre of biographical films.
