12 Children Taken to the Hospital After 5-Vehicle Crash Involving Elementary School Bus and 2 Dump Trucks

A serious road traffic incident occurred in Monroe Township, New Jersey, on Thursday, 3rd September, involving five vehicles, including a school bus transporting nine students. The crash left a total of twelve children and two adults injured, requiring their transfer to local hospitals for evaluation and treatment. Thankfully, those involved have either been released or are reported to be in stable condition.

The Monroe Township Police Department reported that the event unfolded around 4 p.m. when a commercial dump truck travelling northbound on North Tuckahoe Road failed to notice a stationary passenger vehicle. This vehicle was stopped in traffic in front of an unconnected school bus, which had just released its young passengers from Oak Knoll Elementary School. The impact of the dump truck colliding with the rear of the passenger car sent it careening into another vehicle, which was being driven by an adult female.

Consequently, this second vehicle smashed into the rear of the school bus, resulting in further damage as the bus then struck the back of another dump truck, whose driver had attempted to manoeuvre away from the imminent collision. Police reported that during the chaos, one child became trapped in the rear of the passenger vehicle and required extraction by the local fire department.

As the situation unfolded, emergency services promptly attended the scene, where the wellbeing of the bus driver and all students was medically assessed. The Monroe Township School District confirmed that although various children were taken to hospital for further examination, all were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries and have since been released; parents were made aware of the situation without delay.

The school district assured concerned parents that mental health support would be available for students who may have experienced distress due to the accident. Counselors are scheduled to be present at Oak Knoll Elementary School to provide assistance to the children following this traumatic event.

Local resident Jaime Young, who witnessed the collision, recounted how the sound of the crash was overwhelming. “It sounded like an explosion,” he described, explaining how he rushed outside to assist those affected. “I noticed it was a red dump truck that rear-ended a white SUV, which then hit another vehicle in front of it,” he added, detailing the distressing scene where he found a woman holding a child and desperate to reach another boy trapped in the back seat of her car.

According to reports, this marks the third day of school for the Oak Knoll students, and the district emphasised its commitment to ensuring the safety and mental wellbeing of those involved in the incident. Classes will continue as normal, with additional measures in place to accommodate any students requiring further support.
