A typical round-trip fare from New York to London could reach approximately $7,574, which meant many flights operated at less than full capacity. This financial aspect diminished the aircraft’s appeal despite its appeal to niche markets.

The fatal crash of Air France Flight 4590 on 25 July 2000 marked a defining moment in the Concorde’s story. The aircraft was departing from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport for New York when disaster struck. During takeoff, a main landing gear tire struck a fragment of metal left on the runway by a preceding flight. This resulted in a burst tire which subsequently ruptured a fuel tank, igniting a fire. Tragically, the aircraft crashed into a hotel, killing all 109 passengers and crew on board as well as four individuals on the ground.

The consequences of this disaster extended beyond the immediate loss of life. The Concorde’s reputation took a substantial hit, and operational restrictions were implemented in the wake of the incident. As investigations continued, it became increasingly evident that factors such as the aircraft’s high operating costs, expensive ticket prices, and the loud noise generated during takeoff contributed to the decision to retire the fleet. The noise level during takeoff was measured at 119.4 decibels, comparable to a thunderclap, which led many cities to ban Concorde flights altogether.
Over the years following the Concorde’s retirement, there has been ongoing discussion about the possibility of reviving supersonic travel. In 2025, the White House directed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to consider lifting the ban on supersonic flights over land, a significant step towards reintroducing this form of air travel. Companies like Boom Supersonic are at the forefront of this movement, developing the Overture jet, which is designed to travel at speeds of Mach 1.7.
Boom’s Overture jet has garnered interest from several major U.S. airlines, who are keen to explore opportunities in supersonic air travel. The company has ambitious plans, stating that it aims to begin flying commercial passengers again by 2029 or 2030. If successful, this new generation of supersonic travel may breathe life back into a concept that once captivated the world.
