Filmmaker and philanthropist Tyler Perry has come to the aid of Brenda Daurham, an 81-year-old resident of Markham, Illinois, who is facing significant financial challenges following a burst pipe in her home. The incident, which occurred on Valentine’s Day, has left Daurham overwhelmed with nearly $18,000 in debt after her homeowners insurance claim was denied.

Daurham has lived in her property for over 40 years, faithfully paying her insurance premiums. However, when the water pipe beneath her kitchen sink ruptured earlier this year, she was shocked to learn that her insurance company, Allstate, would not cover the damages. Daurham described her distress to Fox Chicago, saying, “I have nothing, nothing at all, so I just want somebody to help me.” She mentioned that the stress of the situation took a toll on her health, leading to a visit to the emergency room.

Images from the scene reveal considerable damage, not only to the kitchen but also to other areas of her home. Initially, Daurham was optimistic about the situation, believing the insurance would settle the costs. She recounted how the fire department responded and assured her that matters would be addressed through her insurance plan: “The fire department came out and then I called the insurance company and they said everything was covered. I didn’t have to worry about a thing.”
Following the burst pipe, Daurham enlisted the services of Excel Fire and Water Damage Restoration Services, operating under the assumption that Allstate would honour her claim. However, her hopes were dashed when the insurance provider denied her claim, citing exclusions for “wear and tear,” “deterioration,” and “seepage.” Daurham expressed her frustration noting, “You think you have insurance, you think you are covered, and I had the highest of everything… then when something happens they don’t cover anything.”
Excel Fire and Water Damage Restoration suggested that the damage should be covered due to a “sudden and accidental plumbing failure,” considering that Allstate’s policy includes terms covering sudden water escape from a plumbing system. Despite this argument, the insurance company maintained its refusal, leading Excel to file a mechanic’s lien against Daurham’s property on August 20 for $17,827.96, alongside additional fees.
Amid the financial strain, Daurham felt hopeless, stating, “By no means” could she afford to cover the amount herself. The burden of the situation weighed heavily on her, prompting her alarming visit to the hospital due to anxiety and stress. “It’s horrible, it’s devastating. I can’t even stand it any longer, that’s why I had to go to the hospital,” she remarked.
In a fortunate turn of events, Tyler Perry has stepped in to assist Daurham. Reports indicate that the filmmaker has agreed to cover the nearly $18,000 lien and will provide an additional $25,000 to help her recover from the ordeal. This generous gesture has been widely lauded, as Perry aims to alleviate Daurham’s distress and help her get back on her feet.
Perry took to social media to express his outrage towards Allstate, urging the insurance company to take responsibility for its role in the unfortunate situation. In an Instagram post dated September 2, he addressed the firm, questioning their commitment to customer care: “This woman is 81 years old. You call this being in good hands?” He accompanied his message with clips from Fox Chicago’s coverage of the story, reaffirming his support for Daurham and signalling that help is on its way.
The story of Brenda Daurham has sparked conversations around the often complicated relationship between homeowners and insurance companies, particularly regarding claims and compensation. As the community rallies behind her, this incident highlights the importance of support systems for vulnerable individuals. With Perry’s involvement, there remains hope for a brighter future for Daurham, who has endured considerable hardship through no fault of her own.
For many, this episode serves as a reminder of the value of compassion and the impact one person can have in the lives of others during a crisis. Daurham’s journey emphasises the need for accountability and action from service providers, encouraging a broader dialogue about fairness in the insurance industry.
