Julia Stiles, the renowned actress best known for her roles in films like “Save the Last Dance,” is set to make her debut as a competitor on the popular dance competition show “Dancing with the Stars” (DWTS). In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Stiles opened up about her long-standing consideration of joining the show and the fears that had previously kept her from taking the plunge.

The 45-year-old actress revealed that she had been approached to participate in DWTS on several occasions over the years. Despite her love for the show, Stiles had consistently turned down the offer. “It’s taken a couple of years,” she stated, reflecting on her hesitation. “They’ve asked me in previous years, and every year I say, ‘Oh my God, I love the show, and I would love to go on, but I just can’t do it.’”
Her reluctance stemmed mainly from personal apprehensions. “For a number of reasons, the first one being my own fear,” Stiles explained. However, this year was different. Motivated by the mantra “You only live once,” she came to the conclusion that it was the right time to embrace the challenge. “This year, I was like, ‘I’m scared I might say yes,’” she added.

For the upcoming season, Stiles will be paired with the talented DWTS professional dancer, Ezra Sosa. Sosa, who has participated in the show since season 33, made a notable impression last year as he achieved third place alongside Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles. Stiles expressed her enthusiasm for being paired with Sosa, stating that she wanted to join forces with him “so badly.”
Meeting Sosa left Stiles feeling overwhelmed with excitement and nerves. “I was so nervous. I was shaking. I was literally shaking,” she recalled her initial feelings upon meeting her partner. Although accustomed to being in front of the camera through her acting career, the importance of this moment made her unusually anxious. “I have spent a career in front of cameras. I’ve done live theatre. Why am I shaking?” she questioned.

Sosa also shared his own experience during their first encounter. “It’s surreal when you have Julia Stiles walk in the door and she’s your partner, and the first thing she says is, ‘I’m so starstruck,’” he revealed, adding with a laugh that he almost collapsed on the floor from surprise.
As the season unfolds, Stiles admitted that her nerves fluctuate, describing them as coming in waves. Despite the anxiety, she sees these feelings as a natural part of the process. “I think nerves are a good thing when they make you stand at attention; they make you focus. You just don’t want to be overwhelmed by them,” she explained, suggesting that a bit of nervous energy can actually be beneficial.
Looking ahead, Stiles feels more at ease now that she has completed the promotional appearance on “Good Morning America.” “I feel great now because we got GMA out of the way, but now we’re looking at premiere night, and I’m just mentally preparing,” she noted, indicating her eagerness to take on the next challenge.
Sosa is equally optimistic about Stiles’ potential on the show. He expressed admiration for her dedication and work ethic. “I am very impressed by her work ethic, her drive, and just to see her growth in the two weeks. It makes me super excited to see her growth and her journey on the show,” he said. Referring to her status as a fan of DWTS, Sosa conveyed his enthusiasm for what lies ahead: “I just see her, and I see the journey that she’s going to have, and it just makes me so happy.”
“Dancing with the Stars” is scheduled to return for its 35th season with a special two-night premiere event on the 15th and 16th of September, airing on ABC and Disney+. For those who miss the live broadcasts, episodes will be available for streaming on Hulu the following day. With Stiles and Sosa as a new dynamic duo, fans are eagerly anticipating an exciting season filled with captivating performances.
