Actor Dennis Quaid has recently shared insights into his fulfilling personal and professional life while attending the screening of his new documentary, *Water Wars*, in Nashville. The 72-year-old star expressed his contentment and joy during this current phase, emphasising that “happiness is all around you right now”.
In a conversation with *People* magazine at the premiere on September 2, Quaid reflected on the lessons life has imparted over the years. He paraphrased a religious text, stating, “The kingdom of God is spread out upon the earth, and man does not see it.” He poignantly remarked, “It’s absolutely true. All you’ve got to do is just stop and look around. I call it the joy of being alive.”
Quaid, who is known for his extensive career in Hollywood, disclosed that he is experiencing a renewed enthusiasm for his craft. “I have more enthusiasm for what I do now than I did back in my 20s,” he noted. The actor attributed this change to his previous mindset of always striving to achieve certain milestones, which he believes hindered his enjoyment of the present.
Reflecting on a significant personal milestone, Quaid recounted his recent 70th birthday celebration, which took place in April 2024. He recalled how his wife, Laura Savoie, arranged a heartfelt surprise for him despite his initial wishes for a low-key day. “She gave me a great party a couple of years ago in Nashville, so I told her I didn’t want a party,” he explained. However, Savoie gathered messages from Quaid’s friends, creating a touching video tribute that he likened to a scene from *Huckleberry Finn*, where one attends their own funeral—a memorable and emotional experience.
Quaid’s role in *Water Wars* sees him narrate a complex narrative centred around a legal battle over water rights in West Texas. The documentary encapsulates the struggle of Dell City, a quaint community situated in the ‘Valley of Hidden Waters’, against the backdrop of lucrative offers from El Paso’s water deals. Tensions rise as local ranchers confront new water board regulations, allegedly influenced by the super-rich, which threaten to divide the close-knit community.
The actor elaborated on his personal connection to the subject matter, drawing from his own experiences living on a ranch in Montana. Quaid explained, “Where I lived used to be part of Yellowstone Park in the 1890s. When that land opened up to ranching, the first thing considered was acquiring water rights.” His insights bring an authentic perspective to the documentary’s portrayal of the significance of water in rural life.
