Sunnyvale, California, has officially launched a new and affordable rideshare service known as Sunnyvale Beam, aimed at enhancing local transportation options. This innovative service was inaugurated on September 1, 2023, and is designed to provide residents, workers, students, and visitors with an economical means of travel throughout the city, operating at a base fare of just £3.50 per trip.
Sunnyvale Beam employs fully electric vehicles, aligning with California’s commitment to eco-friendly transportation. This initiative is not only focused on affordability but also inclusivity, offering discounted rates for seniors aged 65 and over, youths aged 13 to 18, and individuals with low incomes or disabilities. These groups can avail themselves of rides at an exceptionally low fare of only £1.75.
The programme has been made possible through a collaboration with Via Transportation, a company known for providing similar services across various regions. The City of Sunnyvale secured a substantial $4.2 million grant from the California Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program to cover half of the service’s operational costs. The remaining funds will be sourced from the city budget over a five-year period.
Operating hours for Sunnyvale Beam are designed to accommodate a wide range of users, with rides available from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during weekends. Riders can book trips to any location within the city, as well as two designated spots just outside city limits — a local high school and a medical centre.
To encourage participation, Sunnyvale officials are currently offering free rides for new users, allowing them to sample the service without initial costs. Jennifer Garnett, Sunnyvale’s chief public information officer, expressed confidence in the programme, stating, “It’s really important for people to try this service. We think people are really going to like it.”
Initial reports from the community indicate that the service is gaining traction. Just a fortnight after its launch, Sunnyvale Beam is averaging about 65 rides per day from approximately 2,000 users who have already downloaded the dedicated app. While the typical wait time for rides hovers around ten minutes, users may experience wait times of up to 15 minutes during peak periods. The app also allows for advance bookings of rides up to 20 minutes ahead of time.
Driver compensation is structured differently from many traditional rideshare services, as drivers are paid hourly rather than based on ride completions or distance travelled. Reports indicate that drivers can earn between £23 and £25 per hour, enhancing job security and income stability.
Sunnyvale Beam isn’t the first initiative of its kind in the area, with nearby cities such as Cupertino and Santa Clara also partnering with Via Transportation to provide similar rideshare services. The successful implementation of Sunnyvale Beam may serve as a model for other municipalities seeking to improve public transport accessibility and sustainability.
