A Philadelphia man has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of his pregnant girlfriend, Dianna Brice. The case, which captivated the local community, revealed the tragic circumstances surrounding Brice’s death. Justin Smith, 28, was found guilty of first-degree murder of the 21-year-old Brice, as well as third-degree murder of her unborn child.

Her body was discovered wrapped in trash bags in an abandoned lot in southwest Philadelphia nearly a week after her disappearance, which sent shockwaves through the community.

During the trial, evidence illustrated that he attempted to destroy crucial evidence by setting his own vehicle alight. He was apprehended in March 2025 after being stopped by Atlanta police.
In addition to first-degree murder, the jury found Smith guilty of several other charges, including arson, conspiracy to commit arson, and tampering with evidence. His sentence, delivered by Judge Anthony Kyriakakis, included a mandatory life term without the possibility of parole, along with an additional 40 to 80 years for related offences.
The case took another turn with the involvement of Smith’s accomplice, Tylydia Garnett. Prosecutors detailed how she assisted Smith in disposing of Brice’s body. Surveillance footage confirmed that the pair had purchased petrol before they moved Brice’s remains and sought to conceal their actions. Garnett has since pleaded guilty to several charges, including conspiracy and abuse of a corpse, and is currently serving probation.
After the verdict was announced, Brice’s mother, Betty Cellini, expressed her sorrow and disbelief over the loss of her daughter and grandchild. Reflecting on the devastation wrought by Smith’s actions, she stated, “I can’t believe that it has been five years since he took my daughter and my unborn grandchild and left my grandson, who was four at the time, without a mother.”
District Attorney Larry Krasner condemned the crime as “heinous,” emphasising the importance of justice for Brice and her family. He remarked that while Smith may have felt he evaded responsibility, he will now spend the rest of his life facing the repercussions of his actions.
