A young mother’s quest to create a whimsical space for her children has resulted in extraordinary growth from a single Facebook Marketplace purchase into a sprawling village of vintage playhouses. Jayde Hoban, 28, embarked on this unexpected journey, culminating in a collection of 21 playhouses and toy structures that she hopes will delight her children and their friends for years to come.

Initially, Hoban intended to purchase just a couple of vintage playhouses. However, after exchanging messages with a seller who had a plethora of options available, what started as a modest plan quickly evolved. “I had no intention of buying so many,” she recalls. “I thought if he had a few vintage ones, it would be fun to make a small village for my kids.” Four trips later, Hoban, along with her family, loaded her grandfather’s truck and trailer with an eclectic array of vintage playhouses, climbers, and ride-on toys.

Hoban’s selection includes well-known brands such as Little Tikes, Fisher-Price, and Step2. Yet, the restoration of these playhouses has not come without its challenges. Many of the pieces were incomplete, missing roofs, doors, and other accessories that are no longer in production. “Bringing the vintage toys back to life often requires patience, persistence, and a little imagination,” she explains.

For Hoban, part of the charm lies in the restoration process. While some parts may be elusive, the community around the project has been remarkably supportive. Through social media, Hoban has connected with collectors and parents who share photos of their own childhood toys, assisting her in identifying rare models and hunting for the missing components required to make her collection whole.

One particular piece, a vintage Little Tikes Rocket Ship, has proven particularly troublesome due to its missing roof. Despite her extensive search for the elusive part, Hoban has faced difficulty finding it individually. However, she has found success with the Mushroom Kottage, which continues to be manufactured. A wholesaler was able to supply her with replacement parts, allowing her to restore this playhouse to its original glory.

As the project developed, it transformed beyond Hoban’s initial vision. The backyard has been lovingly landscaped, complete with winding paths connecting the playhouses. “I never could have imagined it would turn into what it has today,” she expresses. With children aged three and one, Hoban notes that while her kids revel in the surprise of discovering new playhouses appearing in their garden, they remain blissfully unaware of how extensive the project has grown.

Hoban’s decision to document the journey on TikTok sparked lively debates among viewers regarding whether she had received a steal or spent excessively on her collection. However, she maintains that monetary value isn’t her primary concern. Instead, she focuses on the precious moments spent with her family assembling their tiny town. “Money spent on making my kids’ childhoods magical is never money wasted to me,” she asserts.

Although the cost of restoration exceeded her original budget, Hoban feels no regrets. The family’s shared afternoons, laughter, and the imaginative world they are building contribute to lasting memories. “Time goes too fast, and they’re only little for such a short time, so it’s worth every penny to me,” she concludes.
