Hodo, Inc., a plant-based food producer based in Oakland, California, has announced a voluntary recall of its Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu due to concerns over potential contamination from packaging materials. The recall, affecting over 10,000 cases of the product, was initiated after the company discovered that the ink used on the packaging might have migrated into the tofu.

According to a statement from Hodo, the issue came to light during the scale-up phase of a new product. The company observed a discolouration in the tofu and, upon further testing, confirmed similar findings relating to the affected item. This prompted Hodo to take action and ensure consumer safety by recalling the product from distribution.

The Lightly Fried Chili Crisp Tofu in question is sold in 8 oz packaging and has been distributed in 29 states across the US. States affected by the recall include Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
Hodo is continuing to investigate the root cause of the contamination. Preliminary assessments suggest that factors such as the use of chili oil and heat during production may have contributed to the ink’s migration from the packaging into the product. The company has committed to undertaking thorough investigations to address consumer safety concerns.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is aware of the recall, and details have been made available on the agency’s official website. This oversight underscores the seriousness with which Hodo is treating this potential health risk.
Consumers are strongly advised not to consume the affected tofu products, which were sold to retail stores and wholesalers between January 16 and July 16 of this year. For those who have purchased the recalled items, Hodo recommends returning them to the point of sale for a full refund.
As of now, there have been no reported injuries or illnesses linked to the consumption of the potentially contaminated tofu. However, both Hodo and the FDA are urging customers to remain vigilant and report any unusual symptoms if they believe they have consumed the product.
The Hodo recall serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety practices for both manufacturers and consumers. In light of this incident, experts advise individuals to stay updated on product recalls, particularly in the realm of prepared and packaged foods, in order to mitigate any health risks.
By prioritising transparency and consumer safety, Hodo demonstrates its commitment to providing high-quality plant-based products while addressing potential hazards effectively. The company continues to evaluate its processes to prevent future occurrences of contamination and to ensure that its products remain safe for consumers.
