A fire broke out at the Chez Gado Gado restaurant in Seminyak, Bali, on 30 August, prompting chaos among diners as flames quickly engulfed the popular establishment. The fire, which is believed to have been sparked by a hydrogen-filled balloon during a birthday celebration, resulted in injuries and significant property damage.

Witnesses described scenes of panic, with many patrons fleeing towards the beach as smoke billowed from the building. Eyewitness Paul Cole recounted the terrifying moment, stating, “It lit up like a firecracker… people were screaming and crying and running around.” Joe Xuereb, another onlooker, added, “It was just bedlam. As soon as the fire started, people didn’t know what to do.”

Tara Borelli, a 30-year-old visitor from Sydney, was celebrating her cousin’s birthday when the incident occurred. “It happened right next to us,” she recounted. Borelli explained that balloons were placed on another table for a 70th birthday celebration. A waitress had attempted to light a candle on the birthday cake, but the flame ignited the nearby balloon, causing it to pop and subsequently explode.
Within minutes, the fire spiralled out of control, engulfing the restaurant’s thatched roof. Borelli recalled her frantic escape: “I just grabbed my daughter, who is seven, and my little cousin, who is twelve, and ran straight onto the beach towards the water.” Fortunately, the majority of her family followed her lead, although a cousin opted to remain behind to assist a man in a wheelchair.
Footage captured by other diners quickly surfaced on social media, showing clouds of smoke emerging from the restaurant as horrified witnesses sought refuge along the shore. Reports indicate that an Australian teenager suffered burns to his face and arms during the incident and was subsequently taken to a local hospital. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed their awareness of the situation and stated that consular assistance would be provided if necessary. Additionally, a staff member at the restaurant sustained burns to her hand.
Firefighting efforts were swift, with ten engines from at least five fire stations dispatched promptly. Crews arrived within ten minutes, but it took them approximately two and a half hours to bring the blaze under control. By the time the flames were extinguished, however, much of the restaurant had already been destroyed.
Initial estimates from authorities with the Badung Fire Department placed the damages at around 4 billion Indonesian Rupiah, equivalent to approximately £226,000. The full extent of the destruction and the implications for those affected are still being assessed.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently ongoing as local officials work to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. The tumultuous event has garnered attention, not only for the damage it caused but also as a stark reminder of the potential hazards associated with celebratory events involving balloons.
As recovery efforts begin, patrons and staff alike are expected to be provided with ongoing support and assistance. The community is coming together to support those affected, highlighting the spirit of resilience among locals and visitors alike following the alarming incident.
