An 88-year-old grandfather from Lancashire has seen his life transformed through fitness, amassing a substantial online following and receiving recognition from a global icon. Mick Wadge took to weightlifting following the loss of his wife, Margaret, and has since documented his journey on social media, inspiring many through his remarkable perseverance and commitment to health.

Wadge began exercising in the garden, initially using a stick and two filled milk bottles as makeshift weights. It wasn’t until he joined Ross Starkie’s Barbell School that he accessed proper equipment. Over the past three years, with Starkie’s guidance, Wadge has progressed significantly, currently deadlifting an impressive 100kg and maintaining other exercise regimens that include bench pressing 60kg and squatting 60kg. His training has not only helped him remain active but has also infused a sense of purpose into his life.

Encouraging others to stay motivated, Wadge attributes his fitness journey to a desire to avoid the pitfalls of idleness often associated with older age. “I’ve seen too many people finish life just watching the television 24/7. It’s like they’ve given up,” Wadge stated in a 2025 interview with Men’s Health. He emphasised that his relationship with Stoke is not merely about physical fitness; it’s about enjoying the journey as much as the results. “If I didn’t enjoy it,” he quipped, “I’d probably just wander about all the cafes and coffee bars reading my comics.”
Recently, Wadge’s commitment to fitness has garnered national attention, particularly following the creation of a TikTok account by Starkie. Within a short period, they received an overwhelming response, amassing over 5,000 followers who resonate with his active lifestyle. Supportive comments flooded in, creating a sense of community around Wadge’s profile, affectionately dubbed “Old Man Mick.”
A particularly heartening moment came when Arnold Schwarzenegger, the renowned former bodybuilder and Hollywood star, reached out to Wadge. Schwarzenegger not only praised his efforts but expressed a desire to connect him with two of his coaches in the United States, offering them as potential resources. Starkie described the moment as “absolutely wild,” highlighting the significance of receiving communication from such an iconic figure in the fitness world.
Wadge initially questioned the authenticity of Schwarzenegger’s message, but upon verifying it through the blue verification tick and further checks, Starkie confirmed its legitimacy. With only 14 accounts followed by Schwarzenegger out of his 6.5 million followers, the connection felt personal and significant. “He’s absolutely loving it,” remarked Starkie about Wadge’s reaction to the news.
As plans begin to develop regarding the collaboration, Starkie joked about the possibility of Wadge appearing as a body double in one of Schwarzenegger’s upcoming films. While this notion adds a layer of excitement, Wadge’s primary focus remains on his training and maintaining his health.
Mick Wadge’s story is not simply one of physical fitness; it reflects resilience and a determination to lead an active, fulfilling life despite personal loss. He continues to push himself, setting no limits to his ambitions. “My only real plan is to push myself as far as I can, for as long as I can,” he concluded, showcasing the spirit that has encouraged countless others to follow in his footsteps.
Through social media, Wadge has emerged not only as an inspiration to older adults but also as a beacon of hope, exemplifying that fitness and vitality can span across ages. His journey underscores the idea that health isn’t solely about physical capability but also encompasses mental and emotional resilience, ensuring a richer, more dynamic life. In a world that often sidelines the elderly, Mick Wadge stands out as a testimony to the vigorous potential present at any age.
