A Florida man has expressed immense gratitude for his life following a terrifying shark attack that left him badly injured. David Daniel, 43, was fishing near a sandbar at Boca Grande Key Beach in Key West when he encountered the six- to seven-foot shark on Sunday, August 23.

Daniel’s attempt to evade the shark proved futile when it unexpectedly turned towards him, biting down on the top of his foot. Although the shark released him shortly after, having realised he was not the intended prey, Daniel had sustained significant injuries. “There was so much blood in the water,” he recalled during a hospital interview. “I thought, ‘There’s no way you’re getting off this beach.’”
In the midst of this harrowing experience, Daniel faced the grim reality of his situation. “I was absolutely worried about whether or not I would survive,” he admitted. “Sitting on the beach, bleeding out, I was making peace with myself, thinking, ‘If it’s your time to go, it’s your time to go.’”
Fortunately, timely intervention from nearby boaters proved crucial to Daniel’s survival. Two of the individuals, who were nurses, quickly rendered aid before the U.S. Coast Guard arrived to airlift him to Jackson South Medical Center. “When I saw the two nurse people come up, it was like angels coming out of nowhere,” he remarked, crediting them with saving his life.
Nurse Courtney McMurray later spoke about the incident, remarking on the serendipity of their presence at the beach that day. McMurray and her colleague, Chris Green, rapidly began to control the bleeding and elevated Daniel’s injured limb while calling for emergency assistance. Green noted that they were simply doing their jobs in a moment of crisis, highlighting the importance of staying calm under pressure.
Following their life-saving efforts, Daniel underwent two surgeries during his hospital stay. As of now, he feels stable but is restricted in movement due to the injuries sustained. “My foot is in a boot and wrapped up from the surgeries,” he informed reporters, adding that he feels relatively strong despite his circumstances. He also mentioned the impact of the incident on his health—“my blood pressure’s acting a little funny because, you know, I just got attacked by a shark.”
Having been discharged from the hospital on August 26, Daniel faces a long road to recovery, which will include months of physical therapy. The ordeal has profoundly changed his perspective on life. “I realised that every minute counts,” he said. “One moment, you could be enjoying a beautiful day with friends, and the next, you could potentially end up dead.”
He emphasised the importance of expressing gratitude to loved ones and appreciating those around you. “I really have to look at myself and remember to be thankful for everyone and what I have. It’s essential to tell people you care about them,” he concluded.
In response to his medical expenses—he currently does not have health insurance—a GoFundMe page has been established to support him. As of the latest updates, the campaign has raised over £5,500 towards its £12,500 goal.
