In a delightful twist on a long-held family dream, Sara Mathis and her husband, Taylor, have successfully created their very own secret dessert closet in their North Carolina home. After more than ten years of light-hearted banter about establishing a hidden refuge for their sweet treats, the couple decided it was time to bring their vision to life.

The project, which commenced in June 2026, aimed to transform an awkward alcove in their home into a vibrant dessert haven. Sara, who took the reins on the DIY endeavour, documented the entire process on Instagram, showcasing the transformation from a mundane space to a whimsical retreat for sugary delights.
Initially intended as a gym area housing a treadmill, the alcove soon became an ideal location for their dessert stash. “I realised that this spot was perfect for a secret dessert closet,” Mathis said. The couple moved the treadmill to make room for their creative vision. The renovation was financially manageable, costing around £1,600, and Mathis undertook most of the work herself, allowing for significant savings.
The newly established dessert closet features cheerful pink cabinets, floating shelves, and a variety of playful decor. Among its many features are a mini fridge and freezer, which cater well to the couple’s love for ice cream. “No day is complete without a little bowl of ice cream,” Sara expressed. This essential addition is perfect for satisfying their sweet cravings.
The pièce de résistance of the closet is undoubtedly a retro-style milkshake maker, reminiscent of one Sara enjoyed during her childhood. “It’s such a treat to be able to make a milkshake in my bedroom,” she remarked, emphasising the nostalgia factored into her design choices.
In addition to ice cream, the Mathis family stocked their shelves with a range of favourite treats, including peach rings and Little Debbie snacks. A particular highlight for Sara is her morning ritual of enjoying a Dr. Pepper with breakfast. “I keep my Dr. Pepper stash in that fridge, and it’s so convenient that I can have it in my hand before I even leave my bedroom,” she commented.
Though the couple initially hoped to maintain the dessert closet’s secrecy, their three children eventually uncovered the hidden gem. However, largely instead of detracting from the joy of the project, this discovery enriched the family experience, facilitating shared dessert moments. “We thought it would be a secret, but we found it’s much better when we can enjoy it together,” Sara noted.
The reveal itself has become a source of entertainment and intrigue, allowing Sara to surprise guests by unveiling the hidden space behind a seemingly ordinary mirror. “My favourite part is showing it to other people,” she laughed. The closet’s unexpected charm adds a delightful element to social gatherings.
With the project now complete and functional, Mathis reflects on the process with great satisfaction. Though the effort and costs were on the elevated side, she believes the end result was worth every ounce of work. “I can’t imagine making something better than a secret dessert closet, even if it isn’t still a total secret!” she exclaimed with enthusiasm.
