Tragedy struck off the coast of Kagoshima, Japan, on August 28, when three teenagers lost their lives after being swept out to sea. The incident unfolded at around 3:30 PM local time as the group of middle and high school students engaged in a leisure activity by jumping into the sea from a rocky outcrop.

The victims have been named as Haruki Shitaebisu, aged 17, his 13-year-old brother Kensei, and 14-year-old Takahiro Takemoto. Their deaths represent a heartbreaking loss for their families and the community of Amami Oshima Island, where the boys lived.
Witnesses reported that four students were jumping into the water when two of them began to struggle against the currents. In a desperate attempt to rescue their friends, Haruki and Takahiro jumped in after them, but were quickly swept away themselves. The Japan Coast Guard confirmed that the bodies of the two brothers were located in the sea on Saturday morning. It was later that afternoon when the search team discovered Takahiro’s body. All three boys were pronounced dead shortly after their recovery.

However, there were no official warnings or advisories in place for the coastal area of Ichikikushikino City at the time. Initially, the Coast Guard indicated that the beach was off-limits to swimmers; yet, they later clarified that swimming was permitted in the vicinity.
