Megan Brown, a 31-year-old teacher, has taken significant steps to tackle her escalating credit card debt, which once reached a staggering £40,000. Having accrued approximately £12,000 in repayments, Brown is now sharing her story to inspire others in similar financial predicaments.

Brown’s financial struggles began at 18, when she obtained her first credit card. Her understanding was limited; she recognised the importance of building credit for future aspirations such as buying a car or home, but lacked the guidance on effective management of her finances. This lack of knowledge led to a significant increase in her credit card balance, particularly during her early career as a teacher at the age of 22. As she settled into a new city, the costs of establishing her life and classroom resulted in a great deal of her monthly salary being charged to her credit card, especially as nearly half of her income went towards rent.

As she approached her 30th birthday, Brown realised her financial situation had become untenable. After years of paying little attention to her debt, she knew that achieving her future goals required her to face the reality of her circumstances. It was a moment of clarity in December 2024 that prompted her to take direct action against her debt.

Inspired by various TikTok creators who had documented their own journeys to financial freedom, Brown decided to share her story and seek encouragement from her online community. She meticulously crafted her first budget, an eye-opening experience that allowed her to see her income in relation to her expenses. By February 2025, Brown was fully committed to reducing her debt, dedicating herself to a strategy that included various jobs and lifestyle changes.
Brown’s approach involved working weekends as a beverage cart attendant at a local golf course, where she gains experience while earning extra income. This job, coupled with smaller side ventures such as reselling clothes and selling handmade jewellery on Etsy, has enabled her to chip away at her debt. While some payments have been as small as £10 or £30, other months have seen contributions of up to £180.
Adjusting to this new lifestyle has demanded sacrifices; where shopping sprees on weekends were once the norm, Brown now restricts clothing purchases and embraces meal preparation at home. She notes that meal prep has posed challenges, particularly given the demands of her teaching role, which requires numerous daily decisions. Transitioning from frequent takeaways to home-cooked meals has been a crucial element of her financial overhaul.
With these changes, however, comes a degree of isolation. Brown admits it can be disheartening to witness peers spending money without a second thought, and participating in spontaneous trips often feels out of reach. The emotional toll of her financial journey manifests in feelings of loneliness, yet she chooses to address these issues openly on platforms like TikTok, aiming to connect with others facing similar struggles. Such candid discussions have allowed her to cultivate a sense of community, alleviating some of the shame that often accompanies debt.
Looking ahead, Brown has emphasised the importance of addressing the stigma surrounding financial difficulties. Her message to others in distressing situations is straightforward: acceptance is the first step toward change. After grappling with her own embarrassment, she now encourages others to embrace their financial realities, budget meticulously, and track every penny spent.
With a new approach to her finances firmly established, Brown intends to continue observing her spending habits even after her debt is cleared. The key takeaway she wishes to impart is that belief in oneself is pivotal to overcoming financial challenges. Her inspiring weight of experience offers a beacon of hope to many, serving as a reminder that it is possible to recover from overwhelming debt through determination and strategic planning.
