King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional monarch of the Bantu kingdom of Tooro in western Uganda, has passed away at the age of 34. The announcement was made on August 27, following reports of his critical illness. He had been receiving medical treatment in the United States prior to his untimely death.

Crowned king at a remarkably young age of three, Oyo’s reign began in 1995 after the passing of his father, King Olimi Tooro. His ascent to the throne was significant, as he was recognised by the Guinness World Records as the youngest reigning monarch globally. Although he held no formal political power, Oyo’s influence in cultural matters was substantial, affecting the lives of over two million people in his kingdom.
Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki expressed profound sorrow over the king’s passing, describing it as an “immeasurable loss” for both the Royal Family and the citizens of Tooro. Although no official cause of death has been disclosed, reports earlier that day from a Ugandan government minister suggested that the king had been gravely ill. His reign, which extended for over three decades, was shaped by the guidance of a regency as he was merely a child when he became king. The period of oversight included involvement from several family members and President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda.
Oyo’s formal crowning occurred on April 17, 2010, just after he turned eighteen. During his time as king, he championed numerous initiatives aimed at improving the lives of his subjects, such as youth empowerment, educational advancement, healthcare initiatives, and climate conservation. Among his notable contributions was the launching of the Tooro Kingdom Vision 2045, a long-term development strategy to bolster living standards and promote prosperity within the kingdom.
The monarch also made efforts to raise awareness around pressing health issues, including HIV/AIDS. His commitment to these causes reflects a desire to foster social change and uplift the members of his community.
Outside his royal duties, King Oyo was an avid football fan and a loyal supporter of the English Premier League team Arsenal. He actively participated in local sporting events, often seen cheering at Amasaza Cup matches, showcasing his connection to the cultural life of his kingdom.
